IBM ThinkPad R31

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Wed Jan 19, 2011 2:03 pm

I got my IBM ThinkPad R31 almost comeplete, still waiting for a new CMOS battery to come in. After about a half hour the laptop will completely turn off and I can't turn it back on. I have to remove the AC Adapter for a few seconds and then plug it back in for it to tuen back on. Is there a heat sensor or is the processor getting to hot? I know when desktop processors got hot it automaticaly shuts off. My R31 has a Intel Celeron processor.

I got my ThinkPad R31 back out of storage and it turns on fine but later quit working, All that comes on when on the battery or AC is the ThinkLight. No Green power lights or anything. Not sure why the ThinkLight just comes on.

I'd say most likely that something on the motherboard went bad. Given the age of the system, it could be a bad capacitor. However, even of you remove the board and inspect it, you might not be able to visibly detect which one (or ones) went kaput. A quick check on eBay for an R31 motherboard says you can get one from $20 and up.
