USB inside the housing for a GPS receiver T40
Hello,
I think it is a good idea to integrate a GPS receiver in a notebook.
So I would like to integrate a small GPS receiver in my ThinkPad T40 which connects to a USB port.
1) Do you think there is enough room available for a GPS receiver?
2) is there somewhere an unused USB port inside the housing available so that I do not have use an external USB port (maybe the one that goes to the portreplicator, although I use a portreplicator)?
or do I have to integrate also a USB hub?
Thank you

If you don't use/need a CD/DVD drive , you could maybe put it in there.
You'd probably need to construct some USB port in that same area, feeding it from the USB connection on the motherboard.
Just a couple of wires to be soldered. Use e.g. an old USB extension A-A (male-female) cord that you cut up.
What are the dimensions of that receiver?

This is the module I am considering:
NAVILOCK 551EUSB GPS ENGINE MODULE USB
dimensions are 30 x 30 x 7,9 mm or 1.18 x 1.18 x .275 inch.

If that unit goes in the Ultrabay (where it fits by the way, it's smaller than the CD-drive), it will be surrounded by the light metal CD cage.
You probably need an external/extended antenna to compensate for that (although GPS in a car is surrounded by metal as well..).
On second thought, if you don't need PCMCIA, you can take that cage off completely, and easily fit the GPS there.
It would fit right under the plastic palmrest, and be even a little bit closer to the USB ports.
You'd need to construct some sort of bridge there, to support the palmrest and maintain rigidity.

That's a great idea, thank you, I only used those slots for firewire and memory cards.
I could easily do without them. I could even install a USB hub.
