Slate thoughts ?

#1 Post by csioucs » Thu Jan 20, 2011 3:50 pm

Hi guys!

I followed closely on the web the CES 2011 show.

And I almost couldn't believe the announcement of the Asus Eee Slate EP121. Well, it's not 4:3, and it's not above WXGA but it's IPS, it's having a i5 CPU, and it has an active digitizer, and it's a slate, has enough connectors, and of course, SSD. Are there better slate options for windows? (of course there are a few on the 7 inch bunch, but they tend to be on the too diminutive size to actually use them at more than basic stuff). Of course it won't beat any laptop, but I am sure it would more attractive to use as a nonconvertible tablet for any of the tablet features that I currently use the X61t for...(I have seen X200t as well)

I imagine docking it around a Think Trackpoint keyboard, when in office or need, and to add the cherry to the cake I believe it won't be very hard to make it believe it was a Lenovo to bring Thinkvantage to it. And if I get a black cover the splice is more than palatable, even visually. The best of erm, a world that is and one that has been, until now, only desired.

My guess is that if a slate ThinkPad is to appear, it won't be in 2011.

Edit: Looking at it later, what I said above seems a resigned rumination/work-around in the face of non-slate Think destiny. What I said actually results from a question, which in my case is resolved positively, but others think is important:

Would a ThinkSlate be of use to you? If yes, how would you imagine it being better than the existing ones?
_______

My thanks to the Mod/Admin that has placed this in the proper section as it is just subjectively bound to ThinkPad.

No. If, like every other slate out there, it costs twice as much as a netbook and does half as much, it's not something that interests me.

I've tried very hard to get a good explanation for why the iPad is more useful than a netbook and nobody can do it. The only good argument I've heard is that people who don't use computers are much more easily moved into an iPad than a computer, which is a fair point. But for those of use who understand mice, keyboards, and file systems, there's no reason to choose an iPad over a netbook.

Yes, I've heard the screen size and battery life arguments. For $500, I'm not convinced. I use my laptop everywhere - trains, planes, desks, bed, whatever. I have a keyboard and I don't have to hold the screen facing me. I don't know how a slate is supposed to improve that experience.
X61 Tablet - 1.6GHz C2D, SXGA+, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, Vista Business.

i have other laptops but i'll be honest i never use 'em
