S30 usability...

#1 Post by betyboop » Fri Jan 21, 2011 2:52 pm

Hello,
I'm about to buy an S30 R5J in very good optical condition but with a dead battery for about 100 $. I buy it mainly for its looks, quality feel and rarity but i also want to use it. So, for those who own this model, can you tell me please how does it perform when browsing the web or with simple office applications? Specs are, 600 Mhz processor, 256 Ram, 20 Hdd. Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!

Anything stronger than Windows 2000 or FLP will be slow on S30, there's simply not enough RAM for normal use. You could try a very slimmed-down XP if you can't locate a copy of FLP.

Linux might be another option, but the awkward graphic card (Silicon Motion Lynx 3D) is barely supported by any of the mainstream distros.

Apart from that, S30 is a sweet machine. I just hated the battery...found it to be ugly and always in the way...

Good luck.

Hi ajkula,
Thanks for your replay. I remember my first notebook used to have an XP sp1 running on 80 -90 Mb of Ram, so i suppose that will be a good OS for the S30 with a good amount of Ram left for other applications. I also consider a 7200 rpm hdd, a new battery and voila a lovely netbook to show off at the coffee shop :D I bet nobody will guess that is a 10 year old machine :)
