X41t lcd scratches

I have an X41t that is in decent condition for it's age and want to know about the screen. Is the outer most part of the screen, ie where pen meets screen, the digitizer? Is this a protective layer on top of the digitizer? This particular machine has a few 3" scratches in the screen and I was curious as to what exactly is scratched. RBS, I have looked at the HMM and am confused as to which is the outermost panel, no. 9 or no.12. No. 9 states lcd with protection plate. Is the protection plate a screen protector of sorts? tHANKS, Keith

#12 is the top-layer (digitizer panel), that sits on top of the LCD.
