T400 T500 systemboards compatible

Can a higher spec system board from a T400 be swapped into a T500? This type of change could be made with 14 vs 15" T4* series Thinkpads by using a space (interposer) board so I'm wondering if the T400/T500 share the same systemboard footprint.

No. THe boards are entirely different. The new philosophy is "why design one when you can design three".
