Installing an SSD on a ThinkPad R51

#1 Post by tdavis34 » Mon Jan 24, 2011 5:51 pm

Hi all, I put an R51 board in an old T40 and am running Windows 7 on it. Everything is good, upgraded my processor to a Dothan, have 1.5 GB of memory, fat battery, etc.

The last component of my "tricking out" process is an SSD. Because I use this machine more for surfing than anything else, I don't really need a lot of storage, so I bought a KingSpec 16 GB PATA SSD on eBay for $50 or so.

It got here today and I rushed to install Windows 7 on it, but sadly, the Windows 7 install recognizes it but says it is unable to create a partition on the drive, so I'm stuck. It refers me to BIOS settings, etc., but in fact, I can find NOTHING in the BIOS that references the Hard Drive, it's almost like it's been omitted. I have the latest BIOS (1.29) and Embedded Controller Program (1.04), so I'm just not sure what to do from here.

Anyone have any advice?

Try booting up with something like a gparted Live CD and create your own partition/s.
