Replacing the system board in a t60p

#1 Post by printf » Tue Jan 25, 2011 5:55 pm

i have come to a realization that the chipset in my t60p has problems (was in a notebook repair shop too) so i decided ill finally give a try and replace it.
so far managed to strip it down to the board to read the product number
it is 42w3202, but sadly ebay has no listings for this.
my question is that i need a new system board with the exact same product number or there are other possibilities too?
(note that i want a new board with the same configuration: it has firegl 5250 256 mb, and the cpu is t7200 core2duo, but i guess that does not matter since i can change that (the cpu), the only part that is important on the new board is the graphics card to be the best possible)
i found system boards on ebay with similar configuration but different product number, but i dont want to buy something that isnt physically compatible with the old notebook frame

You need the FRU number, not the part number. Is your machine wide-screen? Post the 7-character type.

its not wide screen
its 14.1 SXGA+
where can i find the fru number?
on the bottom of the machine there are theese numbers: TYPE 2008-CTO
btw i read that number from the bottom of the system board, it was on a sticker

Your original system board is 42T0153 from part lookup on Lenovo site:
42W3202 42T0153 PLANAR FRU YES
42W7588 42T0153 PLANAR FRU NO
Please, note that the rule of this forum does not allow to post serial number of your thinkpad.

If you decided to replace the system board, you may consider to replace by a T61 4:3 format system board. It is more expensive and a bit more difficult, but give you possibility of using faster CPU and overcoming 3GB memory limit on T60/p.
Compaq 386SX > AST 486SX-25 > TP 390E > Compaq N410C > T41 2373-9U5 > T42p 2378-RVU UXGA 1.7@2.45GHz > T60p UXGA modded to T61 8889-ACG with T8300 OCed to 3.2Ghz@1.20V, undervolted to 1.6Ghz@0.775v, Nvidia NVS-140M undervolted to 0.9v, PCI-E ASPM enabled, 11W power in idle.

ok, i edited my second post.
i`d rather stick to a t60p board because the 2 gb i have now is enough for me and i dont want to change the cpu too

Be sure to exactly know which screws you removed in which step. Replacing the motherboard is the hardest part of every replacement in the thinkpad. I did that for my T60, and it did take some time. The manual from IBM is very nice, but you really have to take care which screws you removed in which step :)
