a22m -- 14" and 15" LCD use/switching question

#1 Post by BillMS » Wed Jan 26, 2011 3:12 pm

Hi,

Simply put: is it possible to replace a 'bad' 15" LCD with working 14" LCD on a Thinkpad a22m (different models)?

[Or, maybe simply replace the mobo between the two?]

My a22m (14" LCD) is 2633/1Ghz, the other (with 15" LCD) is a 2628.

In looking for a 'solution' for my 'dead' Thinkpad a22m (BOD casuality), I found (on Ebay currently) a bootable 2628 a22m with a (apparently) bad 15" screen (shows 'nothing'). No mention of external monitor test, and unknown CPU and memory too? (very large, busy seller, too busy? -- still, a hmmmm).

My 14" LCD *looks* like it would fit physically (the Ebay ad, actually a Buy It Now, has a good photo -- looks like the bigger 15" screen just has a bit narrower frame around it than my 14").

I failed to find detailed specs on the a22m's -- so I can't determine similarities etc. (I mean like one can get on DELL's re component pieces etc, when you input the Service Tag.)

Any comments/suggestions very much appreciated. (Before I do something dumb.)

[OR -- Am I beating a dead horse here? :) -- you won't hurt my feelings]

Bill

Physically they won't fit properly, technically it should work.
Mobos between the A22 models all have the same dimensions, so you could swap them.
Pick your HMM from this list: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-39298

Thanks, 'real....' (I love the name)

Just what I was looking for. Oh, the LCDs not fitting properly was a downer -- but, at least, I know it now.

The HMM list was great (I have other Thinkpads too). I didn't know name 'HMM' either.

Now, what to do? Hmmm (I'm leaning to trying the mobo swap; learn something along the way. The Ebay a22m is $39 (including s&h), not peanuts.)

At least, so far anyway, nobody suggested I just give it up. :) (I hate letting even old systems just whither away.)

Thanks again,

Bill

A screen that shows nothing can very well be another bad motherboard...I've seen more bad boards than bad screens on A2x series...

Post a WTB (want to buy) ad in the forum's Marketplace and pick up a known good planar, even if it costs you a couple of bucks more, it's well worth the peace of mind...

Good luck.

Thanks, George, for the input.

Another hmmmmm .. on my part.

The Ebay seller (a store) said 'Item powers on, but does not display.' Maybe I'm reading more to that than I should. I was thinking that the mobo *must* 'alive'. :?

And, with their 'unknown CPU and memory' statement -- again I was thinking (hoping) that there is 'something' of value there, at least. The pictures are fairly good (you get 'what you see' deal -- it even looks like at least the HD caddy is there).

Thanks for the warning. If I go ahead, its my own fault. :) [Now, with caution expressed here, maybe I'll just make an offer - not the Buy it Now price. And, if I am *real* lucky, maybe somebody else will 'beat me to it' -- that will end the temptation. :) Offer is over Feb 3rd.

BTW, I left my own a22m (with the BOD) completely unpowered for 8 days (suggested somewhere here, *maybe* 'clear' the power hangup). Unfortunately, it didn't. No joy.

Thanks again for comments.

Lots of the T series from your era are known to power on, with no picture. Boat loads of bad MoBos. I have 3 T30 boards now, that will power up to nothing, nada, zero! T2?s were know for Blink o Zilch and loose inductors.......buyer beware on no video!

YMMV

RealBlackStuff, George, and Ron,

Just an update: I have re-thought my attempts (with considerable helpful inputs by you forum folks) to 'save' my BOD'd a22m.

So I'm giving up risking Ebay items that offered a 'maybe mobo OK/LCD', or even a 'known' working, but empty, base unit (into which I could move all my components). With the latter, I would (hopefully) have a functional a22m -- but at 800Mhz, a come down from my former 1Ghz. And, still have an a22m, with the prospect future BODs.

Now -- what to do with the carcass. Probably offer parts for sale, first Marketplace here then Ebay later if need be. LCD is fine and someone may want the HD caddy. I can (probably) use the memory or maybe, the DVD myself.

Anyway, thanks to you all for taking the time to chime in with ideas and comments . Saved me from possible time and money disappointments.

This could be loose inductors, tough to tell as is

Im betting if you put an add in the Marketplace you can pick up a barebones for even less! Use some of your left over parts and you are in business.

The eBay seller's description of the fan operation ("fan goes high speed low speed") is exactly a symptom of a loose inductor. I would have made an offer to the seller if it was an SXGA+ wireless system (by all indications, it's probably not).
