R60e Cel 1.46 - upgrade to a dual core t2400/2500 cpu?

#1 Post by Phidelio » Wed Jan 26, 2011 8:07 pm

Hi guys!

I just picked up an r60e with a slow 1.46ghz celeron cpu for next to nothing and wonder; do you know if its possible to get a dual core cpu and just swap it for the Celeron? I did some searches here but answers seem a bit contradicting...

There are a few different CPUs that could work - t2400 / t2500 / t7500 / t7600, though I would settle for a 2400/2500 if possible since they are low priced.

Would be most grateful for any info and tips! Thank you! :)

T2400 and 2500 would most likely work, many members have performed this upgrade.

As for core 2duo, you're looking at T7200/7400/7600 or T5500/5600. Some users reported that they were unable to perform this upgrade, but I personally have.

YMMV.

Good luck.

I thought the R60e with Celerons had the 945GML chipset and could do only a Core Solo?

Thx for the fast answer Ajkula! :) I took the risk and ordered a cpu for like 25 bucks. I will be back in next week to tell you how it all went:)

FYI, R60e's came with two chipset variants. One had the 940GML chipset, the other the 945GM. The 940GML mobo has been reported to support only Celeron and Core Solo T1350 CPUs. The 945GM mobo supports the same CPUs as the R60/T60 including Core Duo and Core 2 Duo CPUs, like T2300, T2400, T5500, etc.

This is why there is conflicting info on R60e CPU upgrades - some DO support Core Duo upgrades and some DO NOT! Refer to the exact part number or machine type and compare to the information in the R60e Hardware Maintenance Model.

I can confirm first-hand that R60e model 0657-34U (originally w/Celeron 420) can not be upgraded with either a T2400, T5500 or T5600. I tried them all. At power on, you receive a blank screen, no beeps at all.

I can also confirm first-hand that a T1350 1.86GHz Core Solo 533MHz bus CPU works perfectly in the same machine. Furthermore, with 2GB of RAM, the machine runs Windows 7 very well and supports Aero.

Note: All of the R60e models that were originally equipped with the Celeron CPU are shown as coming with the 940GML motherboard in the TABOOKs.

While I'm certain that this information holds true, I have a 0657-CTO which was upgraded in a variety of manners, and had both Core Duo and Core 2 Duo in it, although it originally came with a Celeron CPU. With that said, the chipset is indeed a 945GM...

Ouch! You have my sympathies. I haven't bricked a machine while flashing BIOS since 486 days <touches wood>.

Really sorry to hear that, was curious as to the outcome.

Cheers,
Shaun.

Our Forum sponsor aqstech (see ThinkPad BIOS Recovery at the top of this page) could sort your mobo.
Contact them for a quote. They are very good, according to reports on the forum.

Will then a type 9459-WD4 be capable of such upgrade?

I believe all R60s with the Celeron CPU come with the 945GM chipset, which can be upgraded upgraded to the Core Duo or Core 2 Duo. It's only the R60e with Celerons that come with the 940GML chipset, which can only do Celerons or Core Solos.
