System Update - infinite loop?
System Update - infinite loop?
Hi there,
When I run System Update on my X41 Tablet the splash scren opens but then I get an error box open uo that advises me;
"A problem occurred while loading the System Update configuration settings. Please wait while System Update restarts"
I click OK on the requestor window and 5-10 seconds later the same requestor opens up again. No matter whether I click OK or the close gadget the window comes back.
The only way out is to reboot.
I have uninstalled System Update, rebooted, downloaded the latest version (which was the same version as the one I just removed), installed that one, rebooted and ran it again with the same result.
Is there a way out of this please?

Re: System Update - infinite loop?
Your machine's type number might be missing from the BIOS. Has the systemboard even been changed out?
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E
Re: System Update - infinite loop?
Thanks for the quick reply Neil,
No...the systemboard has never been changed out.
I do have three hard discs for this TabletPC though!
The original 40GB HDD where TVSU works OK
A 60GB HDD from another TabletPC where TVSU always works OK
A genuine 60GB IBM SSD where TVSU has this issue.
Are you saying that TVSU will not run on a TabletPC that has been fitted with another motherboar if the type number is missing from the BIOS? Bit worrying as I have changed motherboards when I used to support a dozen or so TabletPC machines...

Re: System Update - infinite loop?
I don't have all the details, but I did run into the same problem once, I just don't remember for certain what the cause was. I did have a machine that was missing the type number, and was thinking that was where I ran into problems with System Update.
TVSU reads the type number from the Windows registry, but the registry will not contain the info if it's not in the BIOS. So you can manually add the type number in the registry and then run system update, and it will work just fine. But, after a system restart, if you want to run update again, you will have to enter the numbers manually again (if they are not in the BIOS).
So...it appears that your issue is somehow related to the SSD and not the motherboard. That goes into an area where I have no experience I'm afraid.

Re: System Update - infinite loop?
The system ID or type number is stored in EEPROM, not the BIOS. The BIOS gets it from the EEPROM. The IBM Hardware Maintenance Disk (HMD) is the only thing that can set it in the EEPROM. If you can go into the BIOS and see a system id that has something in it like 18662GU (I made that up, but the first part is a X41T number), then the EEPROM is not the problem. The SSD may be the problem. If TVSU has a bogus or missing system ID, then it is not getting it from the BIOS, which is not getting it from the EEPROM. That's unlikely if TVSU works fine with some drives and not others. Just filling in the info on the ID. Don't know if I have more info for you.
