w510 video problem

#1 Post by Daniel Davis » Mon Jan 31, 2011 10:37 pm

I am having a big problem with my new w510. At this writing, I haven't called tech support about it. Thought someone here might be able to tell me if this is a problem with the machine or some setting.

After a few minutes, the screen suddenly gets really dark...perhaps 10% of its set brightness. I went into the power settings and made sure it was set to never dim if it is plugged into the wall. It still dimmed after a few minutes. I then went back into power settings and told it NEVER to dim on battery either...but the problem persists.

I ordered the second "charging station" power cord..to use at home, with intention to use the power cord that shipped with the machine at the office. However, today, I forgot the main power cord. I don't know at this point if the screen dimming is due to the lower power rating on the other cord or not. I'll bring the main power cord to the office tomorrow. In any event, I don't want to use the backup power cord at all if it's going to give me this problem.

Have any of you heard of a problem with the w510 display dimming unpredictably? Interestingly, if I unplug the machine from the wall..with the battery in place...the screen pops back to normal brightness, only to repeat the problem a few minutes later.

If you are not using the 135w power adapter the W510 runs slower and may possibly dim the screen.

Yep. I think I just figured out the confusion. I thought I was ordering another power supply that also happened to run the computer. What I bought was a charger...only.
