problems installing driver for IBM 11a/b/g Wireless card

#1 Post by Jonathan Cordery » Sun Mar 20, 2005 2:26 pm

I am installing a new IBM 11a/b/g wireless card into my T41p (2373-GGG). It previously had an Intel PRO / 1000 mt card. The installation cd that came with the card states that to install the device driver in Windows 2000 or Windows xp I have to right click My Computer, select property-hardware-device manager and then (and here is the problem) double click the PCI ethernet controller, however this doesn´t appear on the list.

Does anyone know how to install the device manager under this situation?
I would phone IBM only it´s sunday and I need to install this today.

Much thanks in advance, and afterwards also to whoever can solve this problem today.

Jonathan,
IBM support in USA is open 24/7. 800-IBM-SERV. I just called them this morning. You could try calling them on a regular number.

Download the driver for the card from the IBM Support Site; don't uninstall your Pro / 1000 mt card (it is a wired NIC); install the wireless card; explode the driver to C:\Drivers\... and run Setup. Should work.

Thanks JD. I´ve installed the driver for the IBM a/b/g card, the newer version of Access Connections that it required and the new hotkey thing that is required but I can´t get a connection.

If I press fn f5 no wireless option appears in the box, only the Bluetooth. Do I have to uninstall the previous wireless card software now?

Yes, you should uninstall any prior wireless drivers and software. You had pointed to a wired NIC in your first post, so I was not sure. Then check your network devices in Device Manager to ensure you have one wired NIC and one (only) wireless NIC and that they are both working properly according to Device Manager. Then in Access Connections, set up a profile that points distinctly to the wireless NIC (not Best available connection) and see if you can get a connection. Make sure your Access Point is compatible (not filtering out your new NIC based on MAC, using the same channel, and so on). ... JD Hurst

Thank you for your prompt replies JD, although there is still a problem.

How do you unistall the previous software/drivers etc? I´ve deleted the drivers and software using both control panel-install and unistall software and via the device manager yet when I restart the computer the Intel PRO drivers are still there. Also access connections still lists the Intel PRO as the current adapter.

The Intel Pro adapter is the WIRED NIC and it is supposed to be there. Your machine has an onboard Wired connection. You also install a WIRELESS NIC (different). Point Access Connection to the Wireless NIC when you are creating a wireless profile. ... JD Hurst

I´m getting nowhere fast. I´ve reinstalled the old Intel PRO Mini PCI card and now that doesn´t work either. I´ve also noted that the Intel Sebring API is now taking up 4 GB!

I don't know how people get the Sebring API to take 4Gb.

My T41 came with the Intel 2100 wireless NIC and the Sebring API. It did not take up 4Gb (not even close!). I am running the IBM card, so I can't measure the amount it did use any more.

I have Virtual Machines on my ThinkPad and a complete Windows 2000 machine with Office 2000 installed, Acrobat, Winzip, UltraEdit, Internet Explorer and a whack of other software takes 3.1Gb.

I can say with some assurance that no single piece of software I have ever used on any personal computer has ever taken 4Gb.

So I really don't know what circumstances exist to make this API take up such a huge amount of space.
