You can run the Software Installation snap-in in the Management Console. That can control software installations. I don't know if it can be made to affect hardware.

Windows wanting to install hardware began with Windows 95 and is pretty well embedded. What I do if I am upgrading hardware with new drivers is uninstall, cancel any reboot, and install the new driver. That usually works. The other thing I have done is explode the hardware driver and when Windows want to install on restart, I point it to the new driver.

You can also try disabling the device in hardware (see Device Manager). That might help you.

He doesn't mean "remove it". Go to Device Manager, select the Device, and on the bottom select the Device Usage drop-down box and select Disable.

Hi Batuta-

Do I understand correctly that you are trying to take your system drive (or an image thereof) from your working A31 and boot your T42P with it, to avoid re-installation of lots of programs and such?

Generally this is a bad idea. But, do a google on Sysprep and you might come up with a solution. I've never used Sysprep, but it is an MS utility used to prepare a system configuration to be moved to new hardware. I think.

Good luck, and enjoy your new T42p!

A new ThinkPad out of the box will work without any blue-screens or hardware problems. Since back to my elderly A22e (and possibly before), IBM certifies the hardware to the OS installed. So it may be worth your while to re-image the T42 (F11), install the software you need and then bring over the data from the A21. Generally, an IBM Preload today, tweaked to stop unnessary stuff from showing up all the time, is a very good starting point for a ThinkPad. Use the very new Software Installer to update your IBM applications and drivers, add SP2 if it is not already there, patch Windows and you are ready to install whatever.

And to clarify my earlier post, to "remove" hardware is to physically remove minicards and possibly memory to check them, or to "disable in hardware" in Device Manager if you cannot remove them. I still think a re-image will clear up your issues. ... JD Hurst

See "EnableBalloonTips" at my homepage under Tweaks+Features+Balloon Tips, it may do the trick.

I blame Mr. Bill for it all, it's his OS.

As for your concerns, I'm sorry, I have no definite answer. I use to have them all set with no regret but SP2 has reset them. So, my best response is... Trial & Error my friend.

Perhaps after finding out you could enlighten me so as to make my list more intuitive...
