R52 only run on battery but not power adaptor!
Hi guys,
Have a R52 and am using both original IBM batteries and power adaptor. After using it one morning on AC power with battery attached, the power adaptor did not seem to provide charge to the laptop or battery in the afternoon when I turned it on again. Swapped the batteries around but still no charging. Believing that the adaptor could have died, I went down to my local computer shop to get a new one.
Showed shop my adaptor and they tested that it had blown. Purchased an OEM adaptor and tested it at the shop. Laptop's battery charging light came on during testing but I did not actually turn on my laptop.
Went home and tried using the laptop. Once again noted that adaptor was not charging. Immediately went back shop to re-test adaptor. Guy used a voltmeter, tested the adaptor ok and then connect it to laptop without battery. This time no light came on and laptop did not boot. Re-test adaptor and it seemed that it had blown too. Guy told me that it is luckily that the problem lies with my laptop and not the power adaptor.
Just want to find out what could be the problem and the likely solution(s)? Am trying to determine whether is it worth fixing my beloved R52 and let it to rest and salavage the parts.
Appreciate any help you guys can offer, thanks.

Re: R52 only run on battery but not power adaptor!
I have the same situation with an R52, but possibly different circumstances. This laptop was connected to a so-called universal power adapter for a few days. The adapter put out 19v and 16v was required. So some time after, the machine quit running on adapter power alone, but it still runs on battery. I figure that the overvoltage damaged something in the motherboard, so that is what I would like some feedback on. Anyone else have this problem? The DC input is fused, but I suspect that the fuse is good. Will a damaged battery charging chip cause the machine to quit powering from the adapter?

I had the same problem with an R52 motherboard...the forum advised it was probably as fuse. I ordered a replacement motherboard and solved the problem.

I've just bought an R52 (as faulty) that is doing the same thing. Care to link to the thread where you were told that it was likely a fuse? I can't afford a new mobo, in fact I bought it in the hope that I could perhaps fix it make a dollar. I'm fairly sure I can replace a SMD fuse. Wish me luck!
Cheers,
Shaun.

Re: R52 only run on battery but not power adaptor!
My old T20 did that,it would work fine on a charged battery, but would not power up from the power adapter,I checked the connections with a multimeter and it was getting the correct voltage to the board, but would not turn on. I pulled out the battery,CMOS battery, and unlugged the power supply, held the power button for 30 seconds, let it sit for a few minutes, then plugged cmos battery in,put it on my dock and it booted up,then I plugged in the power adapter and it worked too. I went back to using it for about a year after that then sold it,and as far as I know its still working.

Hmmm, I've seen that procedure advocated as a fix-all for most anything. Perhaps I'll give it a go! It's not that hard to do after all.msnuser111 wrote:My old T20 did that,it would work fine on a charged battery, but would not power up from the power adapter,I checked the connections with a multimeter and it was getting the correct voltage to the board, but would not turn on.
