Software to Run X31 Fan

#1 Post by ParatoOptimal » Tue Feb 08, 2011 12:54 am

X31 with W7 Ultimate.
Is there somewhere in W7 that I can control the system fan or do I to DownLoad some IBM/Lenovo software? How can I test my fan?

I'm concerned that my fan may no longer be working. I had my X31 in it's shoulder bag, on a table, leaning against the back of a chair. It slipped down less than two feet and banged on the seat. The hinge side was down. I used it for several hours at a coffee shop after that. I had several tabs open in I.E. in W7. It locked-up. I thought it maybe the shop's router bottle necking or restricting usage or my RAM was overburdened. I forced a shut down and thought when I got home and connected via CAT5e that my router would have more wiggle room and my tabs would have been saved from the crash.

The I.E. tabs were gone and everytime I boot, checkdisck runs. Twiced I've gotten a blue screen warning that it shut down my computer to protect it. I may have gotten that screen once at the coffee shop too.

My battery light is green when I'm using the battery. It turns yellow when I connect my power adapter. W7 reports that the battery is at 92% available and charging but it's yellow. I recall it used to only be yellow if I hadn't used it for more than a week. After charging while using it for hours, it used to return to green and stay green.

The bottom gets hot. That's nothing new, but I haven't noticed the fan blowing any air out.

I pulled the battery and the 1.256GB RAM and it all seems fine.

Thank you

TPFanControl should allow you to see if the fan is running.

No harm opening the upper case up to make sure all connectors are seated properly after a fall. If you shut the thing down and shake it, are there pieces rattling around inside? That would be a sign of damage. Download the PC-Dr disk from Lenovo and run tests on memory and HDD.

No, I did the shake and spin thing and it seems solid.
It seemed to run cool near a cold window of a coffee shop today again without the fan running.

You should hear the fan spinning when you first boot up after a complete shutdown. If not, you need to investigate further. No sense killing the whole system because the fan is not spinning.

For some reason I could not download TPFanControl yesterday with my X31 and W7.
I was able to DL it later that night on a Lenovo with Linux.
I transferred with a thumbdrive and I THINK the fan was working today.

TPFanControl listed a speed that the fan was running at.
I could barley notice air coming out but I think it was. It wasn't hot at all. The bottom of the X31 didn't get hot either as it had the last two days.

One issue that persists is when I boot-up, it wants to check my HDD for consistency/integrity/whatever.
I always stop it.

The one time I let it run, it said it found no problems but then took forever to re-associate or to reference thousands of orphaned files; after which, it still wants to check the HDD integrity every time I boot.
