TP inside car during summer. can hot temperature damage TP?

#1 Post by daeojkim » Mon Mar 21, 2005 12:56 pm

I am thinking of going to a road trip this summer and take my TP so that I can back up files from the digital camera. I may go to places like Grand Canyon where it will be scortching hot and I would have to leave the TP in the trunk while I go sight seeing and such. I was wondering if the high temperature inside the car can damage the TP, especially the LCD screen. I am sure the temperature will go above 120 F inside the car while left parked under the sun.

I will not leave the TP in a direct sunlight but packed in a notebook slip in a backpack and put it in the trunk.

Do you think this will be a bad idea?

I don't think the TP will suffer much damage if you keep it covered in the trunk. However, high temperatures will probably have a negative effect on the life of the battery. Even if you keep the Tp in the car, I'd recommend keeping the battery in as cool a place as possible, such as sticking it in a cooler with your lunch, or submerging it in the Colorado.

Maybe the temperature will not do any damage, but it is a bad idea to leave your ThinkPad in your car for any time. I lost my 380XD when someone broke into my rental car. It was in the trunk, out of sight.

Since then I never leave my notebook in my car, not even for a couple of minutes ...

I agree with Kenn on the battery issue....it probably won't "destroy" the battery or anything, but it's definately not good for it.

For more information on how significantly temperature can affect Li-ion battery life:

Thanks everyone for the info.

Now, I will have to find a way to cool the battery... May be just wrap in those waterproof ziplock bags and put it in the cooler in the trunk... :D

I would try to find a way to cool more than just the battery... I don't know which TP you have, but I remember my old T30 lost its second memory bank on a very hot day. A common problem if you search around, and mostly happens during very hot days.
