Best Hard Drive for T60P

#1 Post by taichi » Fri Feb 11, 2011 1:10 pm

My T60P's 90 GB hard drive is filling up. What are good choices (brand, size, type) for a bigger capacity HD? I use Apricorn's Upgrade enclosure to clone the contents of old drives.

Thanks

Perhaps a smallish SSD as a boot drive, then a larger 5400RPM for the ultrabay. The Seagate Momentus XT is worth a look too.

Money is a big issue now, so I'm looking for a single solution... a hard drive more capacious than 90 GB that will work in my T60P. I remember once talking to Lenovo who gave me some misinformation about size limits on hard drives for this unit.

Do I get a SATA drive (if I go with non-SSD)? What's a good one right now?

Thanks

To some degree that's going to depend on how you define "good". Is it size, performance, noise or cost? If you're going with one drive, the Momentus XT is worth a look. It's a 7200RPM drive with a 4GB flash drive attached. It can speed boot times and commonly used applications. I think it's around $100 for the 500GB version. There's 250GB and 320GB versions as well. The Momentus is a good combination of size, performance and cost. There's a huge thread over on Notebook Review if you want to do some homework.

Can you tell me if there is a maximum size that can fit into the standard hard drive bay on my T60p? And am I looking for a SATA drive? Is there a size designation?

I had read some of the reviews on the Momentus hybrids, and if I recall correctly most reviewers didn't think the advantages were worth the cost.

Regarding drives, can you give me a link to a good thread at notebook review?

Thanks

Any 9.5mm 2.5" SATA laptop hard drive will fit.

Thanks for that. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32. Any GB ceilng on what I can install?
I know there was some bad information floating about...some from Lenovo techs...that this machine was capped at 90GB or 120 GB for hard drive storage. I belive you can go a good deal higher than that.

There is no HD size limit for a T60P.

Thanks.

A quick survey seems to show these as two good candidates:

The Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 7200RPM. I read reviews of that when it first came out, and the only real downside is that some user reviews suggest it may be unstable, with some crashes. A good price is just under $120.

For a conventional drive this seems highly rated. The Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB WD5000BEKT. Good prices around $69... only noted downside is that it may be not the quietest drive around.

Thanks, Fred.

Nice long thread, so I read the first page, jumped to about the midpoint of the hundred plus pages, and read this (excerpted):

Here's the top 3 hard drives on Tomshardware, PC Mark Vantage. This is the first run so the XT didn't benefit from it's 4GB NAND."...

On the thread is also some talk or rumor of Seagate increasing NAND. Obviously developments have taken place since the "midpoint" so I shall continue reading...

On the Momentus XT thread I found this forum and thread linked:

http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Momentus-X ... td-p/59455

It appears, as I had gathered from other sources, that the hybrid drive may have some issues, possibly most of the problems being when installed in Macbooks and Lenovos.

i'm running the 7200rpm, 500gb, 16gb cache hitachi travelstar in my t60p. quiet, fast and big enough, for now. i've always had a preference for the travelstars and also like the hgst disk tools.

cheers.

I've always had Travelstars, but I'm toying with the notion of getting that Western Digital 500 GB for $69.

I like my peace and quiet. There are some Hitachi travelstars that are very quiet, at this moment I have a 300 Gb TravelStar (before a 100 Gb travelstar) and the performance of this 300 Gb is faster and quieter. The Seagate that came with the T61p did not last out the first week, that's how noisy it was.

There is also a utility that you can use to set the travelstar into a quiet mode rather than best performance. On the 100 Gb it was noticeable but on the 300 Gb I could not hear a difference.
