T61p won't power up..?

#1 Post by BillMorrow » Sun Feb 13, 2011 9:04 pm

I have two T61p's with the wuxga display.. M/T 6457-5KU..
both DID work but one has now refused to power up..
it never makes it through the boot process..

when plugged in the power indicator is on and when a battery is present, the batt indicator is on..
when the power button is pressed the "on" indicator lights up and the num lock and caps lock briefly light up, then go out..
the HDD spins.. and continues to spin until i press the power button and the "on" indicator goes out..

and thats IT..
no beeps, no splash screen..
nothing but the power on and appropriate battery and ac power indicators..

press the on button again and it powers down.. well, the power on indicator goes out and the appropriate battery and ac power indicators remain on or off according to ac power or a battery being present..
and the HDD spins down..

i have swapped battery, memory, HDD (with others) and reseated or pressed down on the various connectors under the palm rest and keyboard..
also i pulled the CD drive..

i have tried powering it up with no memory, HDD, wifi or modem card.. no change..
i pulled the CMOS and still no change..

anyone have an idea..?

I vaguely remember something similar on an A31 I once had but cannot remember which one did it. I do know one did once not have the screen working properly, something with replugging the high voltage inverter not being plugged in all the way. The other had once a broken MB which was replaced under warranty. Try an external monitor perhaps? Sorry that I cannot help you more.

G'Day Bill;

here are some suggestions ( things I did once or twice ,,,,, B 4 sending to Depot Repair!!:)).....Process of Elimi'ations:

1) boot > than go to Bios - run Mem test
..............if passes than you sweet
2) Boot , AFTER REMOVING hard drive ( NO OS)
...........Should boot to Bios mode .....should come up saying " no os found"
3) than I would pop-in a Windows 7 DVD (boot from it)
and ............you get to a place > "...repair windows..."than do the REPAIR ,,, nd it should fix any windows startup issues etc ,,,> worked nicely for my 2008-T61p....
4) remove any 'added cards " eg Wireless/ Usb etc ,,, than reboot in SAFE MODE...or boot in DOS MODE (if possible!!!)

..since you have dome the battery+ CMOS , power etc ..... might be something 'internals' ,,,

sorry cant be of much help .......

cheers

it does not boot to anything..
no lenovo splash screen, only the lights and HDD spinning and thats IT..!

it does not even get to the beep codes to complain about no memory..

for these symptoms, the HMM says to check the connections or replace the system board.. :(

The only other thing I would do is to remove everything on the PCI bus. (drives, wireless, WWAN, Turbo memory) I would also try no battery, as opposed to a different on. Also, try on batery with no a/c. I also have a post card that may tell where it is hanging. Unfortunately, those motherboards are hard to find and expensive.

It plugs into a USB port and also the battery connector.

It does not come with a list of codes. I have an old list from an old one from a T42 that fit into the wireless slot.

Wikipedia has some codes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power-on_s ... beep_codes
More codes can be found here: http://www.millennium-solutions.co.uk/L ... -FLIPPOST/
Check the top right hand corner where it says: User Manual
