Rebuilt OS ... problems
Hi ... brand new to the forum; hope to find some help!
I have rebuilt a T60 ... flattened the hard drive and reinstalled XP Home Edition. Unfortunately I've run into a bunch of issues.
I have purchased a subscription to Driver Detective to help get the system up and running as I don't have any to the original image's drivers ... OS software only. Most of the drivers are operational now ... but still have several problems
1) No Audio driver ... Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus. I've tried to Uninstall and let the system find the driver (can't find it), install the driver that Driver Detective recommends (won't install), and found a Realtec driver recommended somewhere on this forum. How can I get this installed?
2) Under Other Devices within device manager, I see a Yellow ? for "Other Devices" ... any ideas?
3) I have a problem when the system sleeps ... when I wake it up after several hours of inactivity the keyboard and touchpad are not operational. I need to reboot. Any suggestions?
It has been suggested that going to Windows 7 will solve my problems ... thoughts or confermation?
Can I UPGRADE to Windows 7 from XP Home, or should I flatten and rebuild?
Thanks

Welcome for the forum!
Getting all the drivers and other system tools and updates is super easy, just install dotnetfx and System Update from Lenovo, and the rest is pretty much automagic! That is as long as you have an internet connection. Sometimes I'll download the ethernet drivers (if needed) and System Update on another computer and just install from a USB flash drive, then run System Update.

download system update 3.14, it will find all of your drivers for you. If you are going to upgrade to windows 7 from your current state (I.E. not working), I would do a clean install and then download system update 4.0 - this will download all of the drivers and software, and install it automatically. I am not sure what is wrong with suspend, but I would reccomend using lenovo drivers instead of generic ones (once it is working, you can upgrade individual ones you have problems with)

Welcome to the forums!
I have a T60p which I've rebuilt a couple times for XP and, subsequently, 7. I think System Update is supposed to find "everything", but in my experience it doesn't. I don't have any recollection of major issues such as you report, so I'll just tell you that my typical approach is to go to the Drivers Matrix from the Lenovo support site and manually download / extract / run-the-installation for everything that seems appropriate. For me "appropriate" means all drivers and utilities except for the ones I explicitly don't care to use (Access Connections, for example).
Once all the yellow alerts in Device Manager are gone, I download System Update and use it from then on.
It might be an hour of work to do all this stuff manually, but the payoff is real.

Tried this ... the Audio Driver will not take ... I've run it 4 times but no-go. Anyone deal with this specific issue?ArtShapiro wrote:Welcome to the forums!

Re: Rebuilt OS ... problems
when you ran the driver, did you go into c:\drivers\ and run the program from in there, or did you only run the program you downloaded - that does not install the driver, it just extracts the drivers so that they can be installed.

I'm not sure where I ran the update from ... I did download, extract and run the install however. Does it need to be from c:\driver ?craigmontHunter wrote:when you ran the driver, did you go into c:\drivers\ and run the program from in there, or did you only run the program you downloaded - that does not install the driver, it just extracts the drivers so that they can be installed.

Yeah...somewhat curiously "it" tells you where under the DRIVERS folder your files have been extracted, but expects you to run the .msi (or whatever) file manually. Just one of those quirks of IBM / Lenovo.jeffreyrichard wrote: Does it need to be from c:\driver ?
Once you're using the System Update tool, everything will be performed automatically.
