R51 died question

#1 Post by jronald » Fri Feb 18, 2011 5:55 pm

I wound up with an Intel R51, worked well for a year. Wife was using it, and it shut down. She hit the power button and it came back on. Used it for several hours and then she shut it down. Continued to shut down occasionally for a week. Now it will not start consistently. If you fiddle with it for 20 to 30 minutes, it may start once or twice. Pressure on and around the chassis does not make any difference. I finnaly gave up and ordered an ATI complete chassis from the bay dirt cheap, and swapped the HDD. Had to load the right ATI drivers but the wife is up and running.

I see several ATI based MoBos on the bay at reasonable prices are any of these less prone to issues than others?

Thanks
Ron

My experience with R51 boards is quite the opposite. The Intel boards are much more reliable than the ATI boards. You have to consider that the ATI R51 boards are the same ones used in T41's and T42's..bad mojo there with loose GPU's and Southbridges. In fact we have lengthy TR451 threads here where R51 Intel boards are used in T41 chassis because they are reliable. Can't explain what happened to your wife's machine, it's unfortunate.
