R51 1400X1050 IPS / Flexview Display issues

#1 Post by ex0dus » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:51 pm

Would like some help with an R51 1400X1050 IPS / Flexview display.

When turning on the machine after being off for sometime the initial IBM logo screen will be reddish, but that soon goes away and by the time the XP desktop loads it's normal (apart from the typical slight yellowing from right to left, which is minimal). It's still a very beautiful display, but it does have it issues and then what look like key rub marks on it as well. I only paid $57 for it so it seems like a steal... really well built and the Dothan is fast!

My questions are:

1) Should I worry about the reddish at startup (this is a new machine for me)
2) Is it worth it to source a new IPS 1400X1050 panel, and if so, do they even exist without paying $800 to IBM?
3) If I do get a replacement panel, is it an easy replacement like on the T6X series?

Thanks!

The reddish hue on start-up is due to a weakening CCFL (backlight) in the LCD. I would not worry about it unless it bothers you or if it fails completely. I have seen LCD's with this reddish condition last for years, or it could be days ;). Panel replacement is easy and can be sourced on EBay.

Thanks for the reply Harry!

I'll look on Ebay, but I don't think I can trust that seller. He sold me a "1+ hour R51 battery" that won't even charge, might have a blown fuse or something.

Got a new screen swapped in. I was worried about buying a used screen, but it's just like NEW. Bright and WHITE1 Very crisp, no yellowing at all, and uniform back-lighting. Just as good as my desktop IPS NEC display.
