X31 Battery Upgrade: 8000mah 9-cell ?

#1 Post by elray » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:36 pm

Good fortune and some BobA parts finally enabled one X31 to come back from the grave-shelf; it seems to be happy and well-behaved, except for the 60-second runtime.

I'm looking at buying a new 9-cell battery. Some ebay sellers seem to have upped the capacity ante from 6600mah to 8000mah.

Other than the usual caveat-emptor with regards to Ebay and 3rd-party stuff, is there any added risk associated with overstuffing a battery set? Charging issues? Fire?

Not really but you'd better ask the seller specifically if there's a warranty and which manufacturers cells are used in the battery. That helps to reduce some risks.

Going with factory stuff, used Im approaching 8 hours on a highly squeezed install of Winblows, how many hours or how hard are you leaning on this poor machine?

My personally set up on demand will easily approach 5 to 6 hours at a clip. Why take the chance with aftermarket stuff?

Here is the "extra" battery (but the price on this one sucks)

Thanks, I have several such spare batteries - none of them are much better. I'm looking to survive through a couple hours of power outage without sitting in the car.

I'm not hard on my equipment - I haven't dropped anything from the second floor rooftop since we did that AE vs. WE rotary phone contest in 1987. Oh, and yes, the WECO phone kept working.

I have purchased a few new aftermarket batteries (X61, T60x2) from high-volume, highly-ranked US-based ebay sellers without incident, for $30-ish each, and have no regrets.

My only concern was whether the denser battery chemistry might conflict with the original charging circuit or overheat/melt/explode/catch fire - but what the heck, I'll just buy it and report back.

Are you running Note Book Control? It can almost double your time, with very mild tweaks. On my son's school X31 I have it strangled with every windows tweak, and NHC. It will do an EASY 6 hours with the wireless turned down. With the wireless off it will do the 8 hours. The extra battery actually puts the laptop at the right angle to use, so its a win/win.

Clearly your mileage may very, I have always been unimpressed with after market batteries. On the other hand, I have had some success with refilling. My A31p's will do more than 2 hours. New A31's would only do 2 hours

i ordered one of these from the seller. it's a 6600mAH battery, ~71.2Whr. it's branded as Denaq. coincidentally, i bought a similar Denaq battery from a web merchant about a year ago and paid about $20 more. it's held up reasonably well but i don't use the extended battery as much as i do the regular battery.

i've yet to see a 8000mAH battery in the same size form factor...it would have to use very expensive cells and i don't see someone going to all the trouble for such an old laptop model.
