Driver for ATI FireGL v3200 in debian 6.0 "Squeeze"

#1 Post by BigCatAndy » Fri Feb 25, 2011 10:08 am

Hello @all,

I'm not sure if I should post this issue here or in Linux-related thread. I hope, that administrators will correct me, if this thread is a wrong one.

Last week-end I updated my T43p from Debian 5.0 to Debian 6.0. After certain trying and testing I found out, that non-free ATI driver "fglrx" shipped with this version of Debian, does not support my graphic card ATI FireGL V3200 anymore. I had to switch to free X-org driver "radeon". And here is my question: is my conclusion correct, or I missed something? Can anyone confirm the behaviour?

Thanks in advance, greetings from frosty Hamburg,

Andrey

You're correct, AMD/ATI stopped to provide driver support for Xxxx series of Radeons in Linux. So unfortunately, T43p users depending only on the open source driver called 'radeon'. According to my experience it is much more slower than binary driver as well as power consumption is higher too.
Current: T420
Previous: T400, T43p Flexview, T40, R52, T43p 14"

thanks for your response. I was just thinking about manual compilation of the driver with "Squeeze"-kernel and latest version of the driver. Would this be possible?

My skills with Linux are probably not so good as yours, so you can try it and post the result here  I would really appreciate some instruction how to use binary ATI driver with newest Ubuntu distribution.

Hello, sorry for delayed response. I would recommend you to search for the instructions on the Web (there are a couple of them available), or just ask people on the Ubuntu-related forums. Ubuntu is slightly different than Debian, it has some special things, and - therefore - my experience with Debian may not be useful for you.
