T42 and Flash Drive

#1 Post by Tony Vella » Sat Feb 26, 2011 8:56 am

I bought a new Kingston DataTraveler 200 (128GB) and copied information on to it easily with my Vista desktop.
Then I tried to use the information on my XP T42.
The drive was recognized immediately upon booting (your new device is installed and ready for use) but I keep getting the message that the disk is unformatted and cannot be formatted.
No content is shown in Windows Explorer although the drive is shown.
Any hints or advice appreciated in advance.
Thank you.

What is the format of that humongous flashdrive, NTFS or FAT32?

Hello. Forgive me but I'm not very good at this stuff. I haven't been able to find "format" anywhere. But ......
On my Vista desktop where it works perfectly, I right-clicked "properties" and got
(under General)
Type: Removable Disk"
File System: exFAT
(under ReadyBoost)
The device format is not supported. Only FAT, FAT32, and NTFS are supported.

Does this tell you anything?
Thanks again.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT
exFAT is also known as FAT64.
Only Windows Vista and W7 (and newer) can read that.
NOT your T42 with (probably) XP.

If you want your T42 to be able to read it, install W7 on it, or format the flashdrive in FAT32.
