Intel X25-M 120GB problems !!

#1 Post by charlier26 » Tue Mar 01, 2011 12:19 am

I bought an Intel X25-M 120GB SSD to use in my X200. I had the 7200rpm 160GB drive in it originally.
I shrunk the main partition in Win 7/64 Pro, so it would not be too large for the new drive. I shrunk it to 100GB, and the Lenovo restore partition is around 9.8GB. There is also a 1GB system partition.

When I tried to use the Intel clone utility (by Acronis), it looks like it is all set up fine, and the utility modified the partition sizes to fit well within the drive. When I tell it to proceed, it repeatedly give a "Operation Failed" exit after about 30 seconds. My computer didn't come with media, and I don't know how else to get the system installed on the new drive.

If I had to buy recovery DVDs from Lenovo I would, but do you think that would work?

Thanks.......FRUSTRATED here.....

If you are using a lenovo preload, there should be an option to burn recovery disks, then you can run those, and use rescue and recovery to rebuild your system. That is the only solution I can come up with, someone else may have a better idea.

Good luck.

Thanks. I did make a recovery disk, but now can't find it, and it won't let you do that more than once. I just wish I knew why the cloning process won't work. I see several people on this board who have the Intel SSD, but don't know what I'm doing wrong trying to clone it with Intel's utility.

I had trouble with cloning to my SSD and gave up. It was a big waste of time.

Best to just build system from scratch.

I have an extra copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 which I purchased before getting a Thinkpad which came with Windows 7 if you wish to purchase it.

I also had a bad experience with Acronis a few years ago. I know it's not what you want to hear, but I also recommend a fresh install.

Keep in mind that the 120GB SSD, after partitioning, becomes roughly 110GB of usable space. Could it be that you have to shrink your Windows install even more?

I finally broke down and did a fresh install. All working fine now, although I still need to move my data over.

I just finished installing my first SSD in my system - also the 120GB X25-M. How do you like yours? What are your startup and shutdown times?

My boot times have gone down to around 25-30 seconds. Pretty quick. What really surprised me is the loading time for Adobe Lightroom or PS. Wow ! All in all, a good purchase. My system was already fairly snappy, but this took the lag out of loading programs, and that's what I hoped for. After reloading, IE7 has been glitchy....Java or Flash might need to be updated. But with Google Chrome...its INSTANT now. Wish the 160GB model wasn't so expensive, I had to shrink the "C" partition to 100GB. Not bad, but nowadays photos (I shoot alot of them) can really fill up a drive. I'll just have to move them onto the server more often.

I clone Lenovo factory images to Intel X25-M drives all the time, using Casper. I can't speak for any other software but that works fine.
