Deleting IBM-preinstalled folders from C: drive

#1 Post by none » Tue Mar 22, 2005 3:28 pm

Hello all,

I just wanted to confirm something. I am cleaning out junk from my drive, and I see no reason to keep IBM's preinstalled C:\DRIVERS, C:\IBMTOOLS, etc... If I end up doing a rcovery though, I want them back. So I wanted to make sure -- they ARE all on the hidden partition, right? Is there anything that needs to stay on C: drive? I386? I feel newbish for asking :P

C:\DRIVERS and C:\IBMTOOLS are IMO fairly safe for deletion. I nuked all the install files located there, although I do keep copies of my latest downloads from the IBM Driver Matrix stored there. All told, I think I freed up about 700MB of space by deleting all those old driver and application install files.

Yes, all of that stuff is located on the hidden partition and will be restored if you restore your computer to factory settings.

As for I386, I am pretty sure that you should leave that one alone.

If you plan to download the new coolness IBM Software Installer you should keep C:\Drivers.

I nuked it on mine the other night and the installer started showing older available versions than the installed version.

Before I nuked C:\Drivers it was correctly showing the latest version as the available version with the installed version being <-- pointing to the available version.

It's not too hard to go down the list and see which is really newer and which is older, but it was nicer when everything showed <--
