Your wi-fi speed?

#1 Post by garnet » Wed Mar 02, 2011 6:45 pm

Hi all
I was just wondering what speeds do you get from your TPad's wifi.
On mine I am getting 1.7-1.8 Mbytes/s to my NAS using wifi-g connection 54mbit/s. Is this too slow or this is what wifi-g offers?

That's about what I get, I might get about 2.5 to 3MB/Sec. I use a Linksys WRT54 router with Tomato and I find I get better throughput.

I use WPA2 as well. I find my Dlink router I use to have on my network really limited throughput. I couldn't get over 1MB/Sec.

It has a lot more to do with your internet connection, I think that the fastest that I have ever seen is 5mb/s with wireless G, but normally it is about 2-3 with a very high speed connection (~10mb/s wired download speed (100mb network)) for file transfers, 4 is about the top.

May be I wasnt clear.
I am talking only about speeds between your wifi card and your wifi router/NAS/other PC in the local network.
My router is WRT54 woth original firmware and 1.8 Mbytes/s is the top in 54 Mbit/s connection
Other machines on same network get 2.3 Mbytes/s.
Is there a reason that my t60 does less.
This is same in win or ubuntu.

Not really sure why your T60 would be lower. The speeds I was referring to were computer to computer. 2.5 MB/sec PC to PC with my Linksys WRT54.

Do you have power saver enabled for the wifi card? How far are you and the other PCs from the router? Is the transmit power in both the router and the wifi cards set at Max or low or in between?

Few things to check.

One other thing to remember, 54MBits = approx 7 MB/sec. I can't remember how it does it, but I think a wifi to wifi connection will cut the transfer in half, so realistically 3.5 at both ends would be the theoretical max. If PC to Ethernet then I could see it going a little higher. The 54 is theoretical number at best case scenario.

Good luck sir!

It is indeed strange. On my linksys I get 1.8 MB/s. I have a wifi-n netgear and in g only mode I get 1.0 MB/s from the t60. Even slower than the linksys.
Complete mystery. Other PCs have around 2.5 MB/s on both routers in g only mode.
Everything seems fine in the wifi card setting, everything is at max.

Hows your signal on the laptop? Check the antennas on the card. Make sure they're attached properly.

It says full signal. I am 3 m away from the router.
Antennas are attached properly both in laptop and router.

The Intel 3945ABG is not my favorite WiFi card. I've had connection problems with them in the past. In fact I have 3 or 4 of them sitting around here that you can have for the cost of shipping. I'd recommend an Atheros card. For a T60 the FRU# is 39T5578. They are all over EBay and very inexpensive.

I have the Thinkpad WiFi card not the Intel one, so that's probably why the transfer speed is a little better.

Hi thanks,
do you know the FRU# for an Lenovo (Atheros) AGN wifi card?

42T0825 ... and you will need a 3rd antenna.

My T60 running Debian Linux has a 3945abg & I'm getting 2.5~2.6 mbps in file transfers from a WD MyBook plugged into my Apple Airport Extreme N router.

I wonder what is different in your setup.

I don't know. It's a very plain T60 1953-DDU running Debian testing. It has 2.5 gig of ram but other than that it's bone stock. The original 60 gig hard drive hasn't even been replaced.

The difference might be the router, though. These Apple routers do perform very well.
