More about 266846U vs 2378FVU

#1 Post by aamsel » Tue Mar 22, 2005 10:54 pm

I have read all of the discussion about these being two of the best 14.1" Thinkpad deals, and I agree.
I currently have a 2378FVU, considering another Thinkpad.

If you add the 3 year warranty and another 256MB to the 2378FVU, it is virtually the same price as the 266846U.

Which of these systems is really better, including the video ???
The 266846U has the DDR2 (if a hair better, faster than DDR, maybe it is much faster?) and the faster CPU. Do you think the speed difference would be noticeable? (no, I don't count nanoseconds, just wondering)

The biggest question is the video chip. The 64MB X300 is said to be the replacement for the ATI 9200. Would it really be comparable to the 64MB 9600 ??
I am not a gamer at all, but do plenty where graphics performance is somewhat important, and video playback, etc. matter to me.

Which do you feel is the better model, and why?
Which is the better video subsystem?
Thanks a lot!

Like you said, if 266846U is the almost the same price as 2378FVU + 3 yr warranty + 512MB DDR2. 266846U is clearly the better model.

X300 is comparable to 9600; (correct me if i'm mistaken) in fact, X300 is slightly faster if you compare every technical statistics of the two chips.

from http://www.rojakpot.com/

Mobility Radeon 9600 300 MHz 1200 MTexels/s 128-bits DDR 200 MHz 6.4 GB/s
Mobility Radeon X300 350 MHz 1400 MTexels/s 128-bits DDR 300 MHz 9.6 GB/s

It's also running on 533Mhz FSB compare to 400Mhz on 2378FVU. Standard Fingerprint reader on all T43 models (right?).

The only thing might cost you more is if you want to upgrade the memory to 1GB. DDR2 is still relatively expensive compare to DDR.

Go for 266846U.

No fingerprint reader or Bluetooth on this T43, IIRC.
