T30 screen gone black/blank after i did a......

#1 Post by j4g3d » Wed Mar 09, 2011 7:14 pm

New to the forum, found the forum through google.

My problem:
I have a IBM t30 laptop which i bought 2 days ago with a known fault which was 1 mem slot wasnt working. Although i booted the laptop up when i got it and it booted up ok.

I took the faulty memory out the faulty mem slot and reflowed the mem slot(done this before successfully on many chips in my time). Since i did the reflow on the contacts the screen no longer works, its totally BLACK/BLANK. I tried hooking the vga cable to my tv and still blank/black nothing. Tried toggling with FN/F7 over and over... no joy.

Im stumped hence why im posting. 1 thing i just noticed whether or not it makes a difference or not i dont know, but the catch that turns the screen off (when you shut the screen down) the little button the screen catches on is missing... as if its fallen down into the laptop.. like i say not sure this makes a difference because it doesnt work on external monitor. I also tried with the docking station, plugged VGA into that... no picture.

Any input welcome.

Thanks

You killed it. Been there done that twice!
If you get a jewelers glass, and look at the slot Im betting you will find a solder bridge between 2 pins. I personally have killed 2 boards when I first tried do my own rework. 1 of the boards, I was able to have professionally fixed. The other one is still dead.

Did you fix it by just removing the solder bridge or were parts blown that needed replaced?

Right, makes sense... Would it be totally dead due to the solder bridge? Could i not remove the bridge or has the damaged already been done? I was so carefull, i didnt let my soldering iron heat up properly and ran the soldering iron over quick and gently. I will need to get a magnifying glass on it to see where its bridged.

Could i not just remove this ram slot completely from the mobo? would that cause anymore problems?

Perhaps, besides you have nothing to loose now!
