T43p No Power

#1 Post by RWDPLZ » Thu Mar 10, 2011 6:16 pm

Just got a T43p 2668-N15, when you plug it in, the power LED's don't even turn on, no indication of the battery being charged, either. Took it halfway apart, and measured the voltage at the jack where it plugs into the motherboard, so does get voltage up until that point at least, jack is fine.

AC adapter is the same one I use with an A22p and A31p no problem, and the voltage it puts out is in spec according to the T43p's HMM.

Tried removing both sticks of RAM (came with two 1GB sticks!) and still nothing.

Ideas?

Try another CPU...if you have one available.

If that doesn't work, you can likely kiss the board goodbye.

Good luck.

I don't think that would be a CPU issue if no lights even come on - without a CPU the laptop ought to at least charge the battery, which is a pre-cpu function.

Check for blown fuses on the board. In most electronic systems fuses are labeled F1, F2, etc.

Interesting thing about the CPU, judging by the discoloration of the heatsink, I'd say there's a good chance it's overheated at least once, maybe that fried it? I was thinking of upgrading it anyway, it has the slowest CPU available in the line.

I've never seen fuses in a Thinkpad? Pics?

Not really. I've given away what turned out to be a perfectly good T43p board that showed no signs of life whatsoever, until the new owner swapped the CPU. It's been purring ever since...

Wow that's perfect! Even has Mouser part #'s. If replacing the CPU doesn't work I'll strip it to the bare board and check all those fuses.
