My Fingerprint Reader is on the Fritz!

#1 Post by RoxyRose » Thu Mar 10, 2011 8:58 pm

So suddenly, out of the blue, during system boot, my fingerprint dialog didn't pop up in place of the password. I logged into windows, and sure enough, at the logon screen the dialog was blinking between "Swipe" and " No reader connected" in intervals of about a second. In Windows, the software icon itself was going from fully colored to greyed out. I thought that maybe there was something wrong with the cable so I reseated it on both sides of the cable. Now the interval that it switches is is a fraction of a section. The program gives error messages when I try to do anything in it. I uninstalled the software & data and went into the BIOS and cleared the passwords (there was no prompt when I did so). Nothing has changed since the last time, it is still flickering between the two messages, is not showing up in the BIOS boot screen, but the software is staying colored instead of greying out (But attempting to change settings still results in an error). Is my reader broken? Just to see if the connection was "damaged" I held the connector down on the motherboard & still saw no change. What I found strange though, was that when I unplugged the cable, nothing happened i.e. the message didn't stop blinking or windows didn't say it was disconnected. I need some big brains to help me out! Is there a firmware update I can use? My laptop is an X60 Tablet.

*****UPDATE*******
Darn it, I thought it was software related, and I think it's been confirmed. I was using th UPEK software and it didn't work, but when I installed Thinkpad version, it allowed me to scan my fingerprints. I really like the UPEK software more. I hope I can fix this. I gues some sort of file somewhere is damaged...but I uninstalled the software completely with data too? I am lost..

Rose*...
Sorry for your problems with FP reader apps

a>I would install the Apps (preferably the ThinkVantage) from Lenovo Website

b>>the FP DATA should than be picked up (usualy stored on HD ((sorry cannt tell you how to recover/copy that due to Security reason))

c>>> If you happen to have the BOP (boot on password) setup for FP swipe atbootup, that will ALSO BE RETAINED and be picked up by newly installed APPS.

The ThinkVantage FP Reader Apps - is one apps that gets messed with with SP1 and other Windows Updates

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think I was very clear. The program I had installed was Protector Suite QL 5.8.2 which allowed me to use my passwords in firefox & startup etc..a very full featured program. Then, the issues started suddenly and without warning. I thought it was software at first after I reseated the cable, but then I thought afterwards it was hardware because I uninstalled & reinstalled the software twice. However, my reader started working properly when I installed Thinkvantage Security Suite..but that program is quite limited. I want to be able to use QL, but I don't know what the issue is. I think I will reinstall and write down the error messages I get.

I believe this is software related.
