what model digitizer is on my w701ds?

#1 Post by pqtex » Mon Mar 14, 2011 6:43 pm

Is the digitizer on the w701ds a wacom? If not, what is it? I'm looking for a model number so I can locate tutorials, general information, manual, etc.

The lenovo advertising and my order confirmation indicates it is a Wacom, but when I contacted wacom with a question about the digitizer, I was told that although my digitizer may have wacom components, it was actually made by a different company.

What is it? I searched my system to confirm my hardware components, and under the Pen/Tablet properties, I find patent information and a version 5.1.1.17 for Wacom. I've never used a digitizer before, and since it didn't come with a manual or CD, I'm looking for information on how to use it. The wacom customer service rep stumped me when he said it wasn't a wacom digitizer.

Thanks,

Jill

Yes, it's a Wacom digitizer.

From my experience with attachable tablets, just move the pen near the surface of the tablet and the mouse should 'snap' to the location on the screen that matches the physical co-ordinates on the tablet- so if you put the pen near the top-left corner your mouse should go there.

I believe Lenovo pre-installs some software on these machines so they can get "maximum" performance from the tablet.

To test the tablet out, just open up either Paint or Windows Journal (it comes pre-installed), select your pen, and start writing. The digital ink should show up on the screen.

I'm assuming that the tablet on a 3200-dollar laptop would be of better quality than my Wacom Pen tablet I bought for 50 bucks, but the basic functionality should be the same.

I think that, if you removed the software before, that it should be downloadable from the W701ds drivers page.

I also can't remember if it's touch-capable or only recognizes the pen. Try it out and let us know.

Thanks, Q-Ball. It isn't touch sensitive, only pen. I've experimented with it and it's a nice feature when working with photoshop or paint. I had originally gone to the wacom site because they have a lot of video tutorials. The tutorials can be sorted by model...and I still don't have a clue about that!

Pqtex, go here:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p566135

and search for the word "Cintiq" on that page. That info also applies to the W701. Much better pens are available for the tablet than the one that came with the W701. That pen is considered a joke by graphics professionals.

Thanks for the help. I'd seen various posts on getting a better pen, but when I was searching for the digitizer model, hadn't come up with that one. I do recall seeing Cintiq on the model list at Wacom for the video tutorials. Appreciate the link with the tips. Jill
