Display defect - is it the lcd cable?

#1 Post by ssd_thinkpad » Tue Mar 15, 2011 6:24 am

After disassembling my 15 inch T60 SXGA+ the display cable to from the main (keyboard) unit to the display unit was not set properly. I noticed on some occasion flickering on my display - both internal and external display (!) This went okay for around two years.

After second disassembling, I noticed that the display turns into "very soft grey vertical lines" mode where you see nothing except black and some soft grey lines. If I moved the lsd cable, the screen was displaying everything perfect. Unfortunately, when I assembled the notebook, the screen is dead.

Do you know of this paticular failure? I definitely think it is the defect lcd cable (FRU 91P6985), but maybe there are other parts which are possible defect?

Sounds like a defective LCD cable. That would be the cheapest component to try first anyway ...

Did an external monitor work after the lcd display stopped working?

Thanks for your answers!

HarryC, I will buy the lcd cable, it's around 20 euro.

billp117, the external display runs fine. Although it is flickering once a day. I am not sure if it has something to do with the lcd cable or if I have hurted other elements in the notebook - I disassembled the notebook twice completely.

Before you buy anything, make sure the cable behind the panel is plugged in all the way. The screw kit for the machine comes with stickers that hold the cable in place. If you reused the old ones, it might not be tight.

I don't know about the stickers. However I did make sure several times that the cable connects to the display properly. Unfortunately the display still had the defect. I bet it is because between the core notebook and the display the cable was in a very bad way connected so it could be hurt for almost two years.
