Ultimate x61? Question follow...

#1 Post by bixm » Tue Mar 15, 2011 7:23 am

I saw, but I cannot belive it ...
There was a guy on local conference with tunned x61.
I JUST CANNOT STOP envying him.
Hi was able to fit in his laptop sxga+ screen, x9000 processor, 8gigs of RAM and all needed connectivity.
As far as I've read 8GB of RAM is common and does not need changing anything besides RAM chips.
I've succesfully moded my screen to sxga+. :thumbs-UP:
BUT HOW IN THE HELL he could possibly fit a x9000 chip in his computer. :?:
After a short talk he said that he had T9xxx earlier on the same motherboard. :o

Could not find any track regarding such a mod on this forum. :help:

Would it be as simple as swaping the chip itself?

After hours of digging i've found out that gm965 in fact can handle the processor itself. :D
Didn't get a clear answer to wheter or not BIOS modification will be needed.
Not a clue on limits of x61 standard cooling unit.

I REALY want to have that kind of chip in my notebook ;) :help:

Any clues on getting it together will be MUCH appriciated.

He probably desoldered old CPU, and soldered x9000 back to mobo.
Seems to be possible, but will require soldering hardware and REAL soldering skills...

Are you serious, he got this - http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=34443 - in his X61?

Link to his thread on your forum please, I'd like to see that.

never knew you can get a x9000 in BGA form, soldering the CPU requires a reballing machine, using soldering iron won't work.

If it is physically possible, than it would require legitimate high end soldering tools. Good electronics repair shops will have the tools. Not a cheapo "we sell open box items we got cheap from the mfg..and also repair cell phones" shop.

Very interesting though. Dig into it and tell us the scoop! That thing must ridiculously hot...I wonder how he keeps it cool.

Hi again,
did you seen any cpu-z or something that could confirm that he is really running this cpu unit in his x61?
YES! Unfortunately no cpu-z or other "put Your hand in my side wound".
Guy runned gentoo and ... we didn't had much time for smalltalk.

Don't get me wrong - I was a sceptic to... that's why i've recently posted here.
I thought that this mod came from here. Was little dissapointed though... that THAT GUY didn't participate.

Back to the case.

Answer to PM: After a while of digging it turns out that 965GM chip CAN handle this CPU - lik here(http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=28117 , on left tab:"COMPATIBLE PRODUCTS", followed by tab:"Processors").
Oh and please post on the board - just for others.
Seems to be possible, but will require soldering hardware and REAL soldering skills...
Guy said that his soldering was done in motherboard repairing facility in Poland (site: http://pccenter.pl/ ) not sure when but the price he stated was  .
A friend called them for me so prices for today are just  59zl which is +/- about 20USD.
They did reball and solder processor to mb for that price.

Quite sure that there is lots of local companies that can handle it for about the same amount of cash.

AFAIK he modified his cooling system. Not sure how, but I'll know 8) .
I'll try to reach him on next conference and possibly take few photos (rule no.1 always cary a phillips screwdriver with you come in handy) if he allows  or not  .
I'll try to get his email or reach him in any other way faster than then.
Please tell us you got his contact details.
YA YA Like how could i forget? I was AMAZED by performance tests and more interested in hardware than its owner.
Could be more to owner if it would be a nice chick but HEY! You can't have it all right?

Definitely will contact him, definitely will know more, definitely will have one of those utill then

Anyone know a cheap x9000 supplier? Willing risk my beaty to have a beast.

IMO X9000 is (even today) not worth it's price.

I'd buy T8100/T8300 - those are relatively cheap.

You can find an X61 with that standard - less hassle that way. X9000... well that would be epic :)

Sounds like a nice mod. As an incentive for others to try this, I'll just leave this here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardwar ... ndows.html

For the X9000 processor, you can have extra multiplier to boost performance, and it's going to run like crazy!

Let's take the OP's idea and run with it...

CPU: Intel X9000 @ 3 GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR2 (low latency)
HDD: OCZ Vertex 3 240GB
DISPLAY: 1400x1050 AFFS IPS
WIFI: INTEL 6300 (with bios mod)
OTHER: 3G + GPS

Now that would be a machine. Anyone have $1K to blow to make it happen? :)

for originial IBM motherboard with T8100 (FRU 42W7858) or T8300 (FRU 42W7860) you still need to pay a lot of money, $950 to $1,025 (prices from ACS).

Complete machines sell on eBay for around $400 pretty regularly.

Yeah I think if I was going to go for maximum power on an X61 I would just get the T8300 that is pretty readily available. Even then, the processor makes so little difference that a T7500 or whatever is practically just as good. The main thing will be a nice SSD and 4 to 8gb of ram.

...and an AFFS mod. On the downside, a T7500 would be pretty hard to find and pretty hot also.
