T42 won't turn off

#1 Post by lppy » Wed Mar 23, 2005 11:12 am

Hey all,

I have a 10 day old (or there'bouts) T42 2373m3u which I love. About 2 days ago, I stolpped being able to shut it down. I can make it hibernate, but if I try shut down or restart, nothing happens.

Could I have somehow turned off the shut down function? I am not used to the keyboard & have managed to accidentily change the display screen quite a couple of times, so I figure anything is possible.

Will probably call ibm this evening, but I thought that I would see if anyone had any thoughts.

thanks
lp

What method are you using to shut down your Thinkpad?

Sometimes, device drivers or buggy programs can prevent a computer from shutting down. If you have recently installed any programs, try uninstalling them until you see the problem go away.

One way to guarantee shutting off the machine is to hold the power button down for about 6 seconds. However, this is not a "nice" shutdown and essentially pulls the rug out from under Windows. If you have any open files, you will probably loose changes.

shutting down the usual way-going toi start button, hitting shut down, flipping scroll to shut down or restart , then nothing happens

if i flip to hibernate, it goes off. About to see what happens if I hold button down for several seconds as you suggested

2373 M3U switches to differnet pixel size and wont shut down

so, I did hold button down, it shut down & then was able to shut down in the usual way, for a half a day

several times, while using outlook, computer suddenly changes to 800x600 pixels. I assumre that I was somehow hitting tab & making it happen (my typing sucks)

Anyay, it converted to 800x600pixels, i switched it back & now it won't shut down again except in hibernation.

so, is this particlar computer just buggy? Has anyone else had this problem?Or is it just my typing. I really love this notebook and want to know if this is the harbinger of problems to come

The Thinkpad has a (very handy) feature to quickly flip between two screen resolutions.

The key sequence for doing this is Fn+Spacebar. Is it possible that you're pressign this key combination by mistake?
