surprise: weight/dimension comparison R-series vs. T-series

#1 Post by glotzi » Wed Mar 23, 2005 12:08 pm

Hello,

I have just read some specifications...

Weight (including optical drive and battery):

R-32: 5.9 to 6.2 lbs (2.6 to 2.7 kg)

T-30: 5.33 to 5.67 lbs (2.42 to 2.57 kg)

oooops... that´s not quite the difference I expected... the weigh almost the same!

and here are the dimensions:
R-32:
12.3" x 10.0" x 1.5"; 313mm x 254mm x 38mm -> 3021 cubic centimeters
T-30:
12.0" x 9.8" x 1.4"; 304mm x 250mm x 36.6mm -> 2782 cubic centimeters

...not even 10 percent difference...

i am quite surprised - what do you think?

regards

The T30 uses a Pentium 4, while the R32 uses a Pentium III. I am actually suprised the T30 isn't bigger.

Your comparison is useless for those buying machines made in the past 2 years. Compare a T4x to the R40 and R5x series and see if you are still surprised.

Hello,

the R32 also uses a pentium 4.

i don't think that my comparison is useless.

i have read several posts where somebody wanted to buy a used thinkpad and asked which model to buy.
and i have read several answers that told him to buy the t-series when portability and lightweight are important.

i also think that the t-series is superior, but 2-3 years ago, there was almost no difference in weight and size between r and t-series.

and this fact could be important for someone who is looking for a "new used" thinkpad.

No, the only T-series that was bulky was the T30. The T2x were quite a lot smaller and the T40s are very small (slim, rather), compared to the T30. I think this (along with the P-M introduction) is why we never saw a T31, but IBM went straight to the T4x series.

You are right about the R32 having the Pentium 4. I was thinking of the R31 for some reason.

The T series is generally lighter and better built. I've compared A T30 to an R31 and the T30 is by far the sturdier machine.
