WIRELESS BROADBAND *** Especially for Australia & New Zeland***

Over last few months -and since a lot of people have ms'd me and asked for advise over use of; or how to setup; install the WIRELESS BROADBAND using the Lenovo [img-http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/cont ... B8FF1FDD2B]Gobi WAN [/img]cards. I am guessing - as a frequent traveller and having access to most of the EARLY RELEASE of Lenovo Thinkpads - I do feel lucky - but often feel its a CURSE of dammned travel jenie,,,,,,,and best way to put travelling in these NEW WORLD is a slow pain that dont ever go away !

1) TYPES OF GOBI CARD - Some Hardware specifics
As the above link shows there are TWO DIFFERENT TYPES of GOBI CARD(s) that could be supplied (re-installed) into LENOVO laptops:
a) 78Y1398
As the description says - its for ATT ONLY and often is PREBUILT into the laptop ( installed a@ factory with DEFAULT SETUP (pre authorised) for ATT ONLY. All you need is your "account details" for the DATA PLANS. Usually this option is best if you simply UPDATING your laptops and already did have an exisiting DATA PLAN. However , you can 'switch' to other carriers and no hardware - reisntall is required etc.. BUT YOU WONT BE ABE TO CONNECT TO A CDMA CARRIERS eg VERIZON ; TELECOM NZ; etc
b) 78Y1399
This the UNIVERSAL GSM card option and is TOTALY UNLOCKED and ALSO will accept Optionsa CDMA SYSTEM SIM CARD. To connect - Simply insert your CARRRIER SIM CARD and register and buy your data plan and you set to go.....This option will also accept CDMA sim card from Verizon, Telecom NZ etc ,, and even if it says "ROAM ANYWaYS" ALERT with CDMA ...just connect to your carrier . Ihave sent in a "BUG FIX" for this "alert". Its just an alert, and often can be confusing @setup time for ALL GOBI CARDS - as the assumption is that YOU WILL ROAM GLOBALLY....

Hope this helps ....Cheers

This will not work for ISPs, such as BigPond Mobile Broadband Next G in Australia, that maintain an active whitelist of IMEIs that are permitted to access the 3G service offering (usually so they only have to support a known set of devices).

It will work with Telstra Mobile Broadband Next G in Australia, as they do not maintain a whitelist.

FYI, Telecom NZ has now shut down their EV-DO service....

G'day Bill ..

well not sure of details (as am currenty in NZ) for Telstra and or Vodafone-Aust/NZ....
details ... but the just wanted to let pple lknow that the INSTALLED HARWARE (GOBI) that is sourced from USA-website does work and no issues so far.....

I am currently on WAN (shows Verison CDMA connection) and it faster speeds than Vodafone NZ it seems.....Also the Telecom NZ did send me 2 Free SIM CARDs to try their "new network" thats for later tomorrow to try...
When I was in Sydney last week - Telstra connection (using esixiting ATT SIM) has no issues ; I even used my TELSTRA ACCOUNT to log into the Telstra account and it worked - NO ROAMING than .......
Bu i do have a Telstra SIM will try later when I getback there in few days time.....

Cheers
