Install alternative OS on my old R32

#1 Post by Wiking » Tue Mar 22, 2011 10:08 am

Hi,
Just thinking how to improve my old R32 with alternative OS (now I have XP).
I'll use this PC for internet, movies, music and office. Also, rarely for power point presentations.
It has 765MB of ram, 160GB HDD, 16Mb ATI graphics so basically it should run any OS for light use.
My question is which to choose ?
Does anyone tried OS's like android, Ubuntu and so.
Found an article and really want to give it a try (want to install not run as live CD)
Problems that my appear ?
Thanks for your help.

the nice thing about some of the linux distros is exactly that you can run them as live cd. get a feel for what works and what doesn't before committing to an install. i've played around with linux mint that way and i kinda like it. i'm just trying to decide which of my machines to commit as a test-bed for a real install.

cheers!

I've been using Linux Mint on my X60s and it's great. Everything works out of the box.

Try the Universal USB Installer and you can pop the ISO into a USB Key and run it from that so it boots faster and runs better.

You can also play with multiple Linux distros without burning a single CD. I would try Linux Mint XFCE or Fluxbox personally, they seem a little lighter in the graphics department.

Or for ubuntu derivitives, you can use Wubi, and install it in a virtual image like a windows program - try it, if it does not work well, you can go back to xp and uninstall it. (I think mint has a special version too)

It is a lot easier to try than partitioning and doing it all by hand.

The R32 appears to be a T30 in a different jacket. That said I have run all of the following on my T30's. No tweaking, no fiddling just install and it worked out of the box.
uBuntu
xuBuntu
kuBuntu
Edubuntu
Gobuntu
Macbuntu
Crunchbang
Fedora
gOS
Jollicloud
Everything, except Jolli has lasted for at least 7 days of testing. Jolli lasted less than 2 days. My favorite by FAR is Macbuntu. It is currently on a x31 and a T30 right now.

YMMV

I'm thinking I will give Fedora a shot on my X40, sounds promising really. I have an old release, but will have to wait until next month to download it. Bandwidth for the month is almost up.
