TP Software Installer problem
TP Software Installer problem
Hi, All,
The new TP SW Installer hangs as it attempts to access the Web on my R51 1836-Q6U at work. It hangs immediately after clicking "Next" on the Find Updated Packages page. The activity box does not appear. The installer works if I uncheck the Internet option.
I've tried everything --- uninstalling, reinstalling, etc. I can't think of anything unusual running on my system. There's a lot more stuff running on the home A21p where this program runs great.
Ideas, anyone?
Thanks!

It works for me, and you say it works on your A21. Firewall issue on your R51? Windows XP SP2 turns the firewall on by default where it never did before or never had one. Also Internet settings can affect this (Automatic settings in IE Tools -> Options -> Connections should be unchecked, for example). ... JD Hurst
I did turn off the WinXP firewall with no luck. IE settings are standard. Both of my TP's have the same OS. The R51 is very new and uncluttered.
This is just weird. No one else here seems to have a problem, so I think I'll have to spend some quality time ruminating over this awhile.

Well, the problem appears to be the office network. SW Installer hangs on every TP behind our Netgear FVS328 Firewall/VPN router.
But the router is a standard setup. All outbound traffic is allowed. There has never been a problem with any other app. SWI works from home behind a D-Link router OK.

I bypassed the netgear router and went directly to the ISP's DSL modem. The SW Installer works fine.
So it is indeed the Netgear FVS328 causing some incompatibility.
All outbound traffic is allowed through the Netgear and there are no unusual settings. I even tried temporarily allowing all inbound traffic, but to no avail.
There is no error message or firewall message. SWI simply HANGS every time before the Web progress message even appears. Win XP Event Viewer shows the hang info exactly the same every time.
I suppose I will take a long shot and call IBM to see if they have any information. Past experience tells me that a call to Netgear will be more than useless.
Thanks for your input.

Yes, the Netgear was updated recently, but I see that a minor bug fix release is available. I'll apply it next week, but I don't see anything in the short list of fixes that would seem to help.
You never know, though.
I've had trouble with Netgear in the past (with one particular model). But I have 2 FVS328's in different cities permanently connected via VPN and several road warriors that have VPN access to both. The firewall is just a basic setup, nothing unusual. The routers have been flawless.

SeanM,
Thanks for the alert. But there doesn't seem to be a new version posted yet. I did connect bypassing the router, but no updates were found. The driver site still has the same old version.
Where did you see the info about SWI and routers?

Fix for firewalls
Software installer was fixed so that it can traverse a firewall. It inherits the Lan settings that are set in internet explorer. A new version of Software installer is not required. The fix was done on the IBM server.
Software installer does not currently support automatic configuration scripts. A new verion will support this in the near future.
I have this info from a very good source.
Regards,
Strangethinker.

Well, I tried SWI again today. It still hangs every time. Whatever IBM fixed was not helpful to me.
Would it be worthwhile to call IBM? Is there a particular department where I shoud report this? Perhaps someone here has an "in" at IBM?

James,
The same hang occurs on my R51, a T42, and a T22 in my office. I have not tried the T's since IBM supposedly fixed something on their server. I'll try the other machines again later when other people get here with them.
And don't forget that when I bypass the Netgear router and connect directly to our DSL modem, my R51 connects perfectly with SWI.

OK, I just tried the SWI on an R51, T42, and T40. The hang occurs every time. It makes no difference if Windows Firewall or Norton Internet Protection are on or off or on with SWI unblocked.
The problem must have to do with interaction between SWI and the Netgear FVS328 router. But, again, there are no unusual settings in the router. No other programs are affected adversely.
I can call IBM, but I doubt I would get anyone helpful with this type of problem. That's why I'm hoping someone here has a connection to someone useful at IBM, and could mention this.

Software installer through routers
I am working with IBM on this problem.
Try clearing your internet cache. And let me know if that has any impact. Also can someone who is having the problem post the first 5 or 6 lines of swientry.xml?
Thanks,
Strangethinker

problem solved
It turns out that SWI had some problems interacting with certain Netgear routers. (This was different than the proxy problem others have had.) An IBM manager saw or was informed of my post here. He e-mailed, then called me and kept in touch over the last few weeks while his team was trying to resolve the issue. He even purchased the same model router for test purposes.
The latest vesion of SWI released in the last few days has solved the problem.
This was a great experience with IBM people. I hope Lenovo does not change this sort of thing as time goes on.

Funny thing happened. The Software Installer doesn't crash any more and frankly, I didn't change a thing!! So wierd!!!
And when it's downloading updates, my internet connection was lost and I pressed Stop, it hangs.
And now whenever I start it, it crash!!!
What the hell is wrong???

While I haven't had these problems, I would suggest the following: Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Find 'Software Installer' in the list, and uninstall. Next go to the following site and reinstall 'Software Installer'. Note there is a link to a help page for Software Installer there also.

Well, I've joined the ranks of the folks having Software Installer problems. I had some trouble with the SFC utility (shouldn't have even looked at it), and had to restore to a system checkpoint of last Thursday night. All is well, but...
SI, if I check the "search the Internet" box, pops up the "Searching the web service" or some such, then ... nothing. No error, no downloaded XML files, NOTHING. It proceeds fine if I tell it not to check the Internet site.
Uninstalled, and reinstalled, the latest version. Nada.
Deleted the application rule in McAfee Personal Firewall. Nada.
All use has been through my router, nothing has changed there.
Cleared Internet cache and files. Nada.
Proxy service? Not being used, Internet settings are straight to the Internet.
My results on SWIENTRY.XML on that FTP site:
Enough people have had this problem. Is this dependent on the Lenovo site being up and alive for SI to function?
