A couple T30 questions

#1 Post by Unknown_K » Thu Mar 24, 2011 9:04 pm

How common were the 1400x1050 LCD screens on the T30?

Second, anybody know of a place that resolders memory holders for the T30, or maybe a website that shows how to do it?

Browsing thru several older posts, several folks recommended...

T30s with SXGA+ LCDs were not dime-a-dozen, but can be found. I've owned quite a few of them.

One thing to bear in mind is that all of these LCDs were 150-nit brightness only regardless of the manufacturer, while the XGA ones came in both 150 and 200 nits...

Usually the machines with SXGA+ LCDs had BT as well, which is pretty cool, with that silly switch on the clear plate - the same as on A3x series...

I have 3 T30's now.

One mint 1.8ghz 1024x768 with one bad memory slot (works with a shim) and VRAM corruption
Another T30 1.8Ghz 1024x768 with one bad memory slot (works with a shim) and perfect screen
and finally another 1.8Ghz unit with 2 bad memory slots (only one of which works with a shim) and the SXGA+ screen.

So basically I will end up trying to get the memory slots fixed or swap the higher rez screen to the middle machine.

What switch are you referring to with bluetooth?

If you're asking this question, your machine doesn't have BT...

On A3x and T30, BT switch is stuck in the middle of the clear plate under the LCD, and you have to press it to turn the BT on and off...it's a small black plastic rectangle, impossible to miss...

Not sure how common it is with the better screen. I have wound up with 3 accidentally, and none of them have had it. It is pretty easy to add though, most if not all of the inverters are equipped with the switch contacts and the parts to make the swap are available on line.

If it's done the same way as it is on the A3x units (for a "factory" look, that is), you have to rip the whole machine apart...because the other side of the BT antenna is terminated on a small plate on the motherboard, and not in the LCD like it is on the later ThinkPads...

i've had bt on a good number of machines and find it more of a novelty than anything else. i used a bluetooth once, and i played around synch'ing a palm pilot via bt a couple times. other than that, i haven't found much use for it.

The official antenna wraps around the exhaust port of the CPU, and it is a PITA to install. As I work with the laptop on the left and whatever Im working on in front of me, I use an Apple wireless antenna and place it in the right side palmrest. That said, I only have 1 A31p and 1 T30 that I added it to. I just dont use it that much.
