Thinkpad t60 2613-HBU
Hello,
I have a problem with my T60 2613-HBU and I was looking for some help and/or advice. Occasionally when I reboot my laptop I would get the 1 beep 3 beep 3 beep 1 beep and no video. This is starting to happen more frequently than before. The battery, power, and z indicator lights are green, but no video. I went to the Lenovo site and it said it could be the DIMM or the motherboard. I then bought two new 2x2GB dimms (G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory Model F2-5300CL5D-4GBSA from NewEgg) to replace the one I had, hoping it was a memory problem. The laptop booted and was working until I decided to reboot the laptop and the beeps came back with no video.
I sometimes can get the laptop to boot up if I unplug the power cord and take out the battery and let it sit there for a little bit. I ran memtest on the laptop for a whole day and the memory came back good with no errors.
Can anyone suggest anything else I can do before I trash it? Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to the forum!
Send it to me, before you trash it!
Seriously!
I've read that there were some bad batteries for these machines that can cause all kinds of problems. Maybe even what your experiencing. Try running it without a battery for a while, reboot a few times as well, and see what happens.

Thanks Neil for your quick reply. I read there was a recall on the battery for my T60, and I have the same "ASM P/N and FRU P/N" on the battery listed on this website.

You have to run the "Automated solution" on this website in order to determine if your battery is eligible for a replacement. I have one problem, I have Linux on my laptop and this is only for Windows. So I called Lenovo support to see if they can help and they said I had to run the "automated solution" in order to determine if I was eligible for a replacement. Even though I had the same ASM P/N and FRU P/N on my battery.
I've tried booting the laptop without the battery and it still having issues. I was thinking about opening up the laptop and cleaning it. That way I can see if I can spot anything wrong with it.
Once again thanks for your advice. I'm glad that there are forums like this were we can get help when others (you know who I'm referring to)
won't.
Thanks again!!!

A good cleaning and inspection is a good idea! But, it's looking like you may have a motherboard fault. Not a very common thing in the T60 line, but I suppose anything's possible.
Looks like you can get a new board from an Ebay seller for under $100, if you are inclined to go that route.

Is replacing a motherboard difficult to do? I've built workstations before, but never messed with a laptop. Especially replacing a motherboard in a laptop.
I guess if anything it will be a learning experience. Can you please confirm that this motherboard is the correct motherboard for my T60 2613-HBU?
Thanks!!

I can't offer any guarantees, but the seller does list your type number as compatible.
A motherboard swap is not difficult. Just time consuming. If you download the hardware maintenance manual for your model, and take your time, following the manuals procedure to disassemble your ThinkPad, you should be fine. For a first timer, expect to spend a couple of hours on the project.

to follow-up on Neil's response...
have a look at the hmm here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62733
i wouldn't say that planar replacement is simple, but it's not too bad, if you're systematic and orderly about it. i did an r50p planar replacement and it took about an hour. doing a second would go faster, now that i know what to expect.
hth.

Can I simply swap out my T5500 CPU in my 1953CTO T60 with a T5600? Or my T2400 core duo in my 2623D6U T60?
