Hard drive speed

Does it make much of a difference? 5400 rpm vs. 7200 rpm.

I'd say it's a bit quicker. It boots faster and applications launch more quickly, but some prefer the lower heat and quiet a 5400RPM drive provides.

With the higher speed, come better electronics, normally. Overall through put is better, even taking the speed into account.

Most of the stores around here don't have laptops with 7200 rpm hard drives. Is it really that noisy?

No, they are not that loud (at least in my experience), but the 5400rpm I am using now, it is fast and gets a 5.9 in the windows 7 Wei score.

remember YMMV

It all depends on the age of the drive. New drives pack more data on the platters so you can read and write more on a newer drive even at a lower speed then an older drive at a faster speed.

The speed kings are SSD now, with no spinning parts to create heat from air friction or noise, no idea how hot they get in operation.
