x301 questions

#1 Post by CHood » Sun Mar 27, 2011 10:49 pm

I tried to search but got lost as there are now so many thinkpads.

I am now 1.5 years into ownin my X301 and am looking to do some upgrades to it.

I bought it without an optical drive. I do not see them on the Lenovo website and can only find used ones. What is a good source? i don;t have a problem with used because I won't use it much and like saving money but just want to make sure new is not available for a little more.

Is there a SSD that can fit in the 7mm drive?

Which 3G radio is the best and what is a good source? That is a SIM card I see when I take out the battery right?

thanks!

Wow, i made this post because i was upgrade happy after installing a new keyboard from lenovo because my old one had some non responsive keys.

this replacement is even worse, is there any underground advice on getting a quality keyboard for these like there was for my T42P (which is still running like a chap after 6 years #quality)

eBay would be my first place to look for a used DVD drive..

For keyboards, you might try eBay as well but you could try getting a replacement from lenovo direct if it's possible.

There is NO ssd or hdd that will fit in the DVD bay. There is an old thread here however of a chap who was going to jury-rigg one into the bay..so far I hadn't heard a thing. So the short answer is no.

Not sure that the DVD drive is SATA so even if there is a SSD that fits, it may be difficult to get it to work.

Both Verizon and ATT were available for a time when X301 was still built. You can look here for further info:

The problem is that even if there is a 7mm drive that fits (which there are a few), nobody manufactures a 7mm HDD optical caddy, so you're still out of luck.

Also IIRC the bay is not SATA so things are further complicated.

What is wrong with the keyboard lenovo sent you as a replacement?
