Pentium M 780 on Thinkpad R52 overheat problems

#1 Post by Vonfeffer » Mon Mar 28, 2011 10:39 pm

Hello,

I have a R52 which came with a Pentium M 750 1.86 Ghz processor and it was like a breeze, now that I have upgraded it to a Pentium M 780 2.26 Ghz, it works at high temperatures... Why is this happening if on the Intel site they are both 27Watts??? And what can I do now that I've paid a fortune on this processor???

Thanks

Tercio

Welcome to the forum!

TPFC comes to mind, for fan control:

http://www.tpfancontrol.com/

And NHC for undervolting the CPU:

http://www.pbus-167.com/

Good luck.

It may sound a stupid question... but when changing the CPU, did you reapplied new thermal paste?

Yes, used Shin-Etsu X23-7783D. Is it normal for this machine to overheat with this processor, after all there isn´t such a big difference between the original one and this one (1.86 to 2.26)... Could the processor be bad? Just don´t wanna hurt my R52. I love it too much! :help:

Thanks for the reply. Will post the changes with the use of those programs. By the way, is it dangerous to lower the processor working voltage?

Tercio

you shouldn't have overheating with the 780. most folks here use/recommend Arctic Silver 5 for thermal paste. what kind of cpu temperatures are you seeing at idle and under load?

idle: 65 celcius degrees under maximum load it reaches 80 celcius degrees.... its burning!!!

How can I lock the processor multiplier?

Thanks a lot for the reply!

Problem solved!!! Used a product to clean the copper of the cooler, cleaned the processor core with a circuitry cleansen product, used an Akasa thermal compound and the temperature keeps arround 53 celcius degrees. Thanks you all for your interest and help, but I didn't need to use those (cool) programs.

God bless you all!!

Oh boy... It was working fine until I reinstalled the TPFan control... After the reset the computer started to boile again... What could be really happening here?

Thanks

Uninstall TPF comes to mind!
Obviously it does not function correctly with your .ini settings.

Problem still persists... Any sugestions? The funny thing is, when I install windows7 with the m780 it doesn't heat up... It only boils when using windows 7 normally... Still anyone out there to help?

Thanks in advance.

Re: TPfancontrol. I think latest versions by default start up in Smart mode, which tends to prefer silence over cooling, and will only turn the fan on when the CPU gets quite hot. As a result - well, it will get quite hot. You can tell TPFanControl to run in BIOS mode (edit the INI file if you want it to always do that by default), in which case the fan will start earlier and the CPU won't get to such high temperatures.

thanks for your reply, but I'm using NHC (notebook hardware control). I lowered the voltage of the processor. But it doesn't work every time I boot up... Using windows 7 perhaps thats a incompability between the apps... Do you know if lowering the processor voltage can cause any harm?

Thanks

It will not cause any damage, but if you set the voltages too low the machine might start freezing.

Do you know a better program to control the processor voltage than the NHC?

No.

I've given up on the entire concept of controlling voltage on my T43p units, both of which have PM780...

Hi,
I´ve transformed my R52 on a T43 (using a T42 chassis). Using NHC with 3.08 volts for the M 780 has worked for me (using windows 7). With 2GB of memory installed on it. works like a charm. Top temp. reaches 73°C (when taking it to the maximum).

Thanks

73° C is OK. I can reach this temperature easily with Pentium M 770 when converting videos from my travelling etc. - sometimes gets to 80° C also. I think these are normal temperatures for the high-end Pentium M's. I use Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound and before I applied it I cleaned all surfaces on the CPU, heatsink and GPU with isopropylalcohol. Heatsink + fan comes from T42p.
