Just one more quick question

is a fresh xp install likely to help the situation...I mean is the issue likely something to do with windows, or is it something connected to the "bios-sphere"....im guessing the bios is built into the hardware and will stay the same regardless if you change windows or not.

Just wondering...i mean its a bit pointless doing it if its not likely to help anything. Installing windows is straightforward enough but It can be rather tiresome doing all the drivers and such.

yes, bios is hardware bootstrapping. it only changes if you update it explicitly. the settings to allow devices to awaken the machine from sleep are os-based, in my experience, at least.

heh...turns out i was trying to find the USB mouse properties in device driver without actually having a mouse plugged in (told you i was a novice).

after plugging in the mouse it did indeed show an extra set of rodent info in device driver, namely an "HID compliant mouse"...........however after some more click-related farting around I still couldnt find the elusive wake up feature........still, at least its good to know he is being well behaved (compliant mouse) .....

anyway, jokes aside, im not gonna waste you guys time on such trifling issues anymore cos no doubt you have better things to do....but a big thanks for all your efforts thus far...really really appreciated.

No doubt i will be back at some point to pick your collectivized brains again though, what with my ever growing array of used thinkpads. I have 4 in total now but only 2 actually work. I am thinking of offloading my fully working T42 on monday to a guy I know who wants it, and then using the money to help buy another t60...might have to fork out an extra 100 bucks to make up the difference...that way i will have 3 x t60s: 1 with a dead motherboard full of ant droppings, but with a decent array of other working bits, and the other 2 working (sort of)...that little stack of black-rubbered interchangableness ought to last me a few years and i can have fun swapping and playing around with the components.....eventually i might become a t60 expert and can start helping people out on here a bit....T60s really do kick but*t (especially when they are fully functional)

no, i only have 3, the power management one isnt there.

anyway bit the bullet and am now re-installing xp.....see how it goes. At least i can find out if it turns off okay imediately after windows is installed, i mean before wasting hours doing the driver thing.

xp installed....shuts down fine now....... . Gonna do the drivers now. I always end up installing more drivers than i need for some reason. I might install system update first and let it do all the hard work.

i realise thinkvantage gets a bad rap and is often called "bloatware", (which it is, i suppose)...but man, system update after a fresh windows install is excellent assistance. It found all the stuff i needed in one hit, downloaded them and then raced through a multiple install of the lot in minutes..i had windows and tabs popping up all over the place and then instantly dissapearing as the auto installations ran amok...awesome stuff . I have 2 thinkvantage applications now and will be keeping them; power manager and system update. I might even dare to get the system recovery and backup one as well cos i know the windows restore thing is lousy.

happy to report t60 now in supremely fine fettle .

The only "gripe" i still have, and its not really a gripe as such, is the keyboard has the smaller "enter" button, not the really big one that your finger always hits bang on everytime. Luckily my old t60 has the big enter button on its keyboard and so swapping keyboards is my next task..and THAT is something even i know how to do.

yeah...my dead t60 with the big enter button is a UK model...its also a nicer keyboard to type on too for some reason....cant think why...might just be less used or something.

this might sound a bit dumb, but does anyone have any idea why my core duo 2400 cpu is running at around 250mhz?

i downloaded a utility thing called "speedswitch", which is supposed to help you turn off the speedstep thing. This utility says my cpu is already running at max performance, and when i hit the "detect max speed" button it says the most i can attain is 540 mhz...seems a bit dismal for a dual core processor....my t42 runs at the full 1.7ghz.

Be honest Im almost reluctant to sell that t42 cos it never seems to have any issues..unlike the new t60...maybe i just bought a dud?

Is that core speed or ram speed (FSB)? 540 sounds about right for DDR2 533mhz. For Example, my T61 has a FSB of 800mhz, and a bus speed of 200 and a multiplier of 9. When you multiply the bus speed by the multiplier you get the speed (200*9-1.8ghz), so my cpu acutally runs at 1.8ghz. Try using CPU-Z and see what speed it tells you.

i also downloaded a utillity called "wizard soft CPU speed"...its got a round yellow smiley face that dances while it reads your speed...according to their result ive got 244MHz, and they added that "I think its time to upgrade, i didnt think these CPUs were still alive".....which i suppose is better than telling me "you may as well have a commodore 64 than the computer you currently have"

The biggest thing in this is
"Core Speed" 1828.9mhz ~1.83ghz - you are running at maximum clock speed for your system

Everything else is just more details about the processor, mostly extranious (used for validation and such). Your system is running at it's top speed, so no need to worry that you are not getting your full potential.

I don't know where the wizardsoft thing is getting it's readings, but your system is still a well powered system for most tasks. Don't expect to do realtime HD video editing with it, but it is sufficent for most tasks. IMHO, I would take a T60 over a commodore 64 if I wanted to get any real work done nowadays.

Are you sure? Is Speedstep enabled? Should that not be 1224 or 2440 or similar?
That 244MHz would be a CPU from the early 1990s!

According to CPU-Z, my bus speed is 200mhz, but I can't see it being faster on a T60 than a T61. According to the wizard thing, my cpu speed is 500mhz. (now it is 775)(now 250) - I have no idea what it is measuring or how, but it is not accurate. CPU-Z is accurate because it uses the hardware measurements. This seems to try to run a set of instructions and measure how long it takes - theoretically it works, in real life it doesn't.

The premise of it, about being sold a "speedless imposter" is kind of pointless. There were issues with processors (a long time ago), where they were factory overclocked and sold as higher versions, but even then, the actually ran at the higher speed (just with the issues inherent with overclocking), without the end-user's consent. They preformed the same as the higher versions, just with shorter lifespans. Then Intel started locking multipliers .

EDIT: The actual speed of my processor is 800mhz, since I am on battery.
