Price crash: SODIMM DDR2 512MB memory for 50c

#1 Post by hiram » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:15 pm

I am looking around for some memory for my T43p and came across some SODIMM DDR2 512MB SAMSUNG memory for less than 50c per stick! The catch is you have to buy 600 of them. It would also help if you lived in Australia (like me) because they would probably weigh a fair bit.

No, a little bit more than I need. :) I also wonder how easy it would be to offload the other 599 modules. Very little call for them, I would think.

Mmm 599 RAM modules, and SODIMM ones too. There must be lots you can do with so many....

How about a dunny out in the bush - that will be as useless as the modules themselves but at least you'll be offering a service to Burke and Wills just in case they are still out there somewhere!

A more serious reply - I do wonder if a charity that sends out laptops to third world countries would have a use for all this memory?

Call me crazy, but I went ahead and bought all 600 memory modules. It was packed in 8 trays of 75.
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/5909/trayk.jpg

I then took them all to a local "swap meet", which is a technology flea market. I was able to swap 1 tray for each of the following:
. $50
. brand new 160GB HM160HC IDE HDD
. brand new 160GB HM160HC IDE HDD
. brand new 15" NMB keyboard for T4x
. 3x used Thinkpad Port Replicator / Docking Stations for X, T, R, and A Series.
. used DVD-ROM Ultrabay drive for T42 + DVD-RW Ultrabay 2000 drive for R40

I still have 2 trays left so I will see what I can do by trading or selling some of them. This is in the forum marketplace now:

Any excess I will probably donate to a local charity.
