My X40 Just died after 7 Months UPDATED** With repair result

#1 Post by eriqesque » Thu Mar 24, 2005 1:33 pm

Well here we go again into easy-serv nightmares.
I turned my X40 on this morning, then I plugged my ipod mini in to sync and boom it shut itself off. I then restarted it and a pop-up came telling my USB power surge ulplug device and click reset and all hell broke loose.
I lost my ethernet and wireless card. Then I rebooted and ran scandisk which ended in a blue screen on restart.
Then I restarted to last known good. And still no ethernet, wireless or USB ports. So I restarted again and now nothing.
It wont boot the battery light is lit and when the power button is pushed all the status lights come on and the power light comes on and the fan spins and thats it, it just sits there.

Aw crap. Sorry, mate, that's pretty harsh. Hopefully it will be something as simple (?) as a motherboard, which shouldn't take long.

I hope so.
I am just going by past work done with easy-serv.
They messed up more than they fixed on my T40.
But here's to a better experience.

[censored]. That sucks. I wonder if the iPod had anything to do with the power surge. Is the iPod still working and can it still connect to computers without problems?

I hope EZServ doesn't screw up your X40's repair.

Yep the iPod is fine.
Actually I had not even connected the ipod to the USB cable yet, I attached the cable to the USB port first and was then going to attach the ipod for syncing.
But you know the USB cable is the same for charging using the AC adapter and that is where the cable was prior to putting in the X40's USB do you think the USB cable stores some current.

It's still sitting at the depot.
Maybe since it's taking longer this time they are doing a better job.

UPDATE

#7 Post by eriqesque » Fri Apr 01, 2005 12:37 pm

Now according to the depot. There is a parts hold on the unit.
No parts available. And no ETA as to when there will be.
This is ridiculous. How can you have warranties for machines currently available and then not have the parts to service them.

i know it shouldn't be this way, but as with any service company, keep going higher and when they get tired of you you will get it. ask for the supervisor, whine a little. good luck

I think it was an ESD, because you carry your iPod and static electricity builds up and then you connect it to your IBM and you have a discharge.

Very simple and effective.

In the manual of my Palm Zire 72 it is noticed that it could happen.
IBM ThinkPad R51 1829-DRG
Intel P-M 1500 MHz

Sorry for my English, I speak german.

Well the Executive team is back on the case, and the person I have in contact there, said he will engage the supervisory team and work with them to expedite the repair. So we shall see.
My only major concern for getting it back is I am moving in about 2 weeks. And I just don't want any confusion.

Call again, politely explain that you want your notebook repaired ASAP since it's been more than 2 weeks, and ask to speak to somebody higher up the food chain.

My x40 was sent to repair three weeks ago and now they are telling me it will take at least another month. This is a laptop that has been crashing since I bought it five months ago and has never been usable for serious work. So for five months I have been stuck without a usable laptop and unable to do my work! I have asked multiple times to speak to supervisors with no luck. Any other tips on how to get this resolved? This is the first IBM I have owned and the whole point of buying IBM was for reputed reliability and service... well, so far I've seen no evidence of either reliability or service.

At IBM in Germany there is a special phone number to make complaints. Should be the same anywhere else in the world. Just call the headquarter and ask the switchboard operator for the number of the complaints departement.

I got a damaged display and a damaged plastic cover replaced after calling there and I have even heard about people who got an exchange offer and could choose a new thinkpad after lots of things gone wrong with their old one.

Usually emails to the execs get pretty fast responses... politely complain and someone will help you get a new machine.

I heard from my Executive team rep. and the depot has informed him that the systemboards are expected to be in tomorrow. He also told the depot tech to make this a critical priority repair. So keeping my fingers crossed that my machine gets done and back to me by Friday and all done correctly.

Got the machine back this morning and I am happy to report that they did a perfect job this time.
I can not even tell the machine was opened up.
There is not even a fingerprint on the lid of the machine.
Also it works.
I am very happy this time around with the depot. Took 10 days from the day they got it until I got it back, due to parts not in stock.
But having the machine come back in this perfect of condition I am very happy.
