Virus recovery -- Windows cannot verify license

#1 Post by oldsguy » Thu Apr 07, 2011 11:48 am

I have two T42s, one of which contracted the Google Redirect virus which later led to a BSOD on startup. In a last ditch attempt to recover the Windows installation without wiping the hard drive completely, I decided to connect the HD to my other T42 and copy the entire System32 folder from the working computer to the non-working one. Now the computer starts and runs fine, but is giving me the error message, "A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer." I assume it has something to do with having overwritten the licensing data from the non-working computer.

Is there a way to repair this Windows installation? I really don't want to have to reformat this hard drive, which seems to be the only option left to me if I use the IBM recovery discs.

Your repair attempt was a good idea, but I doubt if you will recover without a clean install. I'm sure you already tried to restore to an earlier point. Why not get another hd and restore your system there. You will have whatever you are trying to save. Are you using Rescue and Recovery (R&R) or Trueimage? Clone a spare hd and put it away.

Google redirect is a bugger.

Hi,

Try using BELARC and see if it can find the Keycode for windows. Belarc will give you full information about your computer. If the keycodes don't match if one is found then run a search for a keychanger. Run the Keychanger and input the one on your COA from the laptop.
