Anyone have light leakage on their T42/43 display?
Anyone have light leakage on their T42/43 display?
I'm curious, I always see posts about Dell laptops having some light leakage on their displays but I have not seen any posts here regarding it on anyones T42 or T43.
Re: Anyone have light leakage on their T42/43 display?
I have a 2378FVU here now, and it has some light leakage on the right-side of the bezel.
Some weirdness in how the case comes together, and apparently others have had the same thing on their 2378FVU, from what I have read.
No big deal at all, IMHO.

Really? I don't notice that at all on mine.aamsel wrote:I have a 2378FVU here now, and it has some light leakage on the right-side of the bezel.
Is the bezel completely seated? E.g. any obvious gaps along the bezel/LCD margin?

Re: Anyone have light leakage on their T42/43 display?
Looks seated, but yes, there is an obvious gap. beween the bezel and LCD for about 1 1/2" or so.
Again, it is not a big deal whatsoever, and I wouldn't consider returning the unit because of that.
However, the 2378FVU is being returned, since I got a better deal on a T43 on the 30TH DAY FROM INVOICE since I got the 2378FVU.
Since I had never taken the 2378FVU out of the house, and hardly even touched it I don't feel as bad about sending it back.

aamsel,
ups will pickup the t42 for me tomorrow (this morning actually)....today is my 30th day from the invoice too
told that the m3u is now 2 weeks wait.....gonna order a different model soon...
very sad to see my t42 leave but what i learnt from the last 30 memorable, fun-filled days...is that IBM is an excellent company with great support and great laptops....
From now on, i will be with Thinkpads when it comes to buying a new laptop...this is my second laptop (first TP) since the last 2 years.

I ordered a T43 266846U.
It is supposed to ship out in the next few days, but could end up being backordered.
If it does, I don't know what would be a better deal right now??
I need something here in my hands really soon, one way or another.
Let me know what you end up getting, also let me know any models that are a really good "bang for the buck" right now from the VISA/Mastercard or Educational sites. There are so many models that it gets hard to check them all out. I looked for something that Bill might have, but most of his models are higher-end units. The 266846U seemed the best deal, but there may very well be others that are better. Please advise.

I'm eyeing the 4eu....it fits my needs perfectly. Guess what, it's $150 cheaper than the m3u. I already have a 60g 72k laying around so that' perfect for a new format.
If i ended up with the 4eu, i will also order the ibm type II card and swap the intel card out, i have the intel card 2200 on my m3u and it works better than expected for most part but i still have unexplained dropouts now and then.
I intent to put a linux on my pc so the atheros driver will be good.
I'm typing on the m3u for the last few minutes before i box it up.

So, you are considering changing from SXGA+ to XGA??
Just wondering.
If so, what is your reasoning for this?
Update: Whoops! Sorry!
The Educational site lists this as an XGA model.
TABOOK, as usual came through with the correct info.
So, between the one I ordered, this one you are considering (4eu) and the 4du, the only differences are the type of wireless card, bluetooth and fingerprint reader?

I think hard about the choices....between those 4xx models , the only differences are the bluetooth and fingerprint. So, between the one I ordered, this one you are considering (4eu) and the 4du, the only differences are the type of wireless card, bluetooth and fingerprint reader?
Since i liked the fingerprint on m3u so much that i decided it must have fp because it saves me time typing password. So 46u is out, the 4du is without the bluetooth and i think it is $80 cheaper than the 4eu so the money saved and the cost of upgrading it later is not much..
if the bluetooth and fp is not what you want then you can go with 46u real cheap...i was quoted at 13xx (epp) for that model...what a bargain.
Then i look at the 4eu, it has almost everything i want and more. It has a slow 40gb
Looking up at 71u, the cpu is at 2ghz which is mostly comparable with the 1.86ghz.
the 80gb 5400 is nice but slower than my hitachi (I really need to use that drive
The cost is 200 more....
If i decide to get this model, i will get the 74u because it has the ibm card and are at the same price.
I can always get the ibm card at $35 (epp) , swap it, and have a t43 with centrino logo and ibm card inside

Re: Anyone have light leakage on their T42/43 display?
To again try and bring the thread back "on topic": (:))
For example, when viewing some tone of blue, it'll appear as violet in the top and blue in the bottom.
The crack on the right side of the LCD bezel is on mine too, the T40-s that I've seen do not have this "bug". The LCD moves, when you press on the right side, so it is a little loose and again needs some do-it-yourself fix probably.
Or maybe T42-s were a bad series regarding component support and measurements, keyboard flex/movement, palmrest flex/movement, LCD movement, too big multibay opening...
Yes, there is, the top of the screen is noticeably darker than the bottom, this occours on every every non-Flexview.rocketman wrote:I'm curious, I always see posts about Dell laptops having some light leakage on their displays but I have not seen any posts here regarding it on anyones T42 or T43.

Yep, that's exactly how mine is. I assumed that the top vs. bottom lighting difference is due to the backlight being at the bottom?

Re: Anyone have light leakage on their T42/43 display?
The color gradient is indeed caused by the backlight's position. (bottom)aamsel wrote:Yep, that's exactly how mine is. I assumed that the top vs. bottom lighting difference is due to the backlight being at the bottom?
The right side leakage is just another engineering fault that's been bothering me, the next time I happen to be at IBM's office, I'll ask them to take care of it. I don't think a loose LCD that moves a millimeter could be "normal" or "according to specifications".

Re: Anyone have light leakage on their T42/43 display?
The "gradient issue" has been discussed all over the internet for many more notebooks than the Thinkpad. Virtually every 14.1" SXGA+ model has had that issue at one time or another. Where you DON'T see it is on widescreen 15.4" models, since the backlighting is apparently done differently, or from the sides. (That's how I understand it anyhow).
Models like the 14.1" SXGA+ ASUS were having the same issue last year.
Again, I don't know why. I would have preferred the screen quality of a 15.4" widescreen but a.) IBM doesn't make one and b.) I wouldn't like carting it around compared to a 14.1".
